I spent a year in Berlin as a high school exchange student. I’ll never forget the older woman mentor who traveled everywhere by bike. Her example convinced me that age wasn’t a barrier to biking, and now that I’m almost 80 I’m grateful for her example.

Bus in Christchurch with prams hanging off the front
While researching the history of bringing bikes on buses, I just discovered something: in the mid 20th century, buses in Australia and New Zealand had hooks on the front or back for mothers to hang prams off! Bus pram hooks were apparently a unique NZ+Aus phenomenon, found nowhere else in the world.
We design streets so a single person in a car can take up the width of two by default. Yet when we build bike infrastructure, we almost exclusively design for single-file movement.
Cycling is naturally social. It's face-to-face with the world. We should design our infrastructure to enable it.
