I love coming across old pieces I’ve been involved with like this interview of Jonathan Corcoran by Melissa Adamo at @therumpus.net from 10 years ago. How time flies.

In this week's food notes, I pulled a photo from my archives going back 20 years to talk about pasta e ceci.

The NYC public school calendar came out for next year, and the schools are closed on June 8 and June 10 but NOT June 9, in case you're wondering if the world has gotten any less hostile to working parents.
Is it more embarrassing than having a week where school is closed on a Tuesday and also a Thursday?
I think my favorite part next year's calendar is the last day of the school year is a Monday instead of a Friday. I'm sure attendance will be very high that day.
Until @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social gets the @nycschools.bsky.social calendar under control, "universal childcare" is a joke. Yes, let's have a remote learning day in November for no good reason. Yes, let's close schools for 2 days in June, but make it spicy: Tuesday and Thursday.
The scams offering to promote authors are getting so out of hand. Luckily every small business drop ship retail website has a popup offering 10% off if you sign up for their mailing list. Someone is getting a lot of discounts on candles today.
It's finally hot again, which got me thinking its probably time for some Italian Ice. I originally planned this article last spring for the summer, but didn't get around to it until October -- but if you love history and Italian Ice, this one is for you.

I cooked up some chicken parm, and wrote a bit about the history of where it came from.

In four years I got maybe 2 scam inquiries, a bookstore marketing scam based in NJ and an online TV show scam. But in the last 2 weeks I’ve gotten many scams from people imitating real sites and Book clubs ect. Jokes on them; I sign them up for random newsletters and retailer spam.
Very happy to see @gabino.bsky.social writing about the new collection from @pintsncupcakes.bsky.social! locusmag.com/review/every...
Are the "we want to feature your book" scams suddenly getting worse and more frequent or did I just hit some kind of milestone where they found me?
We had lunch at Sami's Kabab House, a favorite of Mayor Mamdani.

More New Yorkers should be talking about the "right to water" bill currently in the assembly that would require restaurants to provide free tap water.

Quiche took America by storm in the 1960s thanks to Julia Child, and it took less than a decade for Americans to Americanize it with all sorts of other fillings.

Our child turned 5 today, which seems like an infinite amount of time that he has existed, and also yesterday.
Me seeing this thread of food books: oh, they really get my reading tastes.
Also me: oh, my book is listed here.
Tasty insights for curious minds. Dig into the stories behind your favorite bites and sips with our Food collection.

Are the billionaires on the way to their bunkers yet?
How weird would it be to have a week long mission to the moon and by the time you come back WWIII has wiped things out.
Tonight’s 9pm presidential speech is to announce the aliens living on the moon that Artemis is meeting up with.
As someone who watched the challenger blow up live on television, I’m always skeptical of watching these things live.
Is Al Roker covering this as a meteorologist? Why is he here?
Everyone on this mission is fishing for the next “one small step.”
Now that the Yankees have unveiled their latest food creations, I've updated the 2026 MLB stadium food guide to include them.

I cooked up some chile relleno, the culinary cousin of the Jalapeño popper -- and looked into the history of stuffed peppers in the latest Food Notes.

Airports are upside down worlds where you can drink at a bar at 6am and nobody looks at you funny but the bagel shop doesn’t open until 8am.
Life hack for reaching customer service: call the comms team media phone number. They will pick up. You can find their number on press releases posted online.
If airlines provide members of congress a material benefit (escorts through airports, shorted TSA lines), isn’t this an illegal lobbying gift? Should they have to report it?
