The Rumpus Interview with Jonathan Corcoran - The Rumpus Jonathan Corcoran discusses his debut collection The Rope Swing, Appalachian writing communities, getting disowned by his family for coming out, and his father's death.

I love coming across old pieces I’ve been involved with like this interview of Jonathan Corcoran by Melissa Adamo at @therumpus.net from 10 years ago. How time flies.

The NYC public school calendar came out for next year, and the schools are closed on June 8 and June 10 but NOT June 9, in case you're wondering if the world has gotten any less hostile to working parents.

Is it more embarrassing than having a week where school is closed on a Tuesday and also a Thursday?

1 day ago 1 0 0 0

I think my favorite part next year's calendar is the last day of the school year is a Monday instead of a Friday. I'm sure attendance will be very high that day.

Until @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social gets the @nycschools.bsky.social calendar under control, "universal childcare" is a joke. Yes, let's have a remote learning day in November for no good reason. Yes, let's close schools for 2 days in June, but make it spicy: Tuesday and Thursday.

The scams offering to promote authors are getting so out of hand. Luckily every small business drop ship retail website has a popup offering 10% off if you sign up for their mailing list. Someone is getting a lot of discounts on candles today.

The History of Italian Ice in New York City - Red Sauce America Summer tastes like Italian Ice. The sweet cold treat was introduced to American cities with Italian immigrant enclaves in the early 20th century. Those early vendors launched the Italian Ice industry ...

It's finally hot again, which got me thinking its probably time for some Italian Ice. I originally planned this article last spring for the summer, but didn't get around to it until October -- but if you love history and Italian Ice, this one is for you.

Food Notes: 4/14: Chicken Parmigiana aka Chicken Parmesan Last week was spring break for NYC school children, so naturally we fled the city for grandma daycare.

I cooked up some chicken parm, and wrote a bit about the history of where it came from.

In four years I got maybe 2 scam inquiries, a bookstore marketing scam based in NJ and an online TV show scam. But in the last 2 weeks I’ve gotten many scams from people imitating real sites and Book clubs ect. Jokes on them; I sign them up for random newsletters and retailer spam.

Are the "we want to feature your book" scams suddenly getting worse and more frequent or did I just hit some kind of milestone where they found me?

NY State Assembly Bill 2025-A10570 Requires certain establishments provide tap water on request.

More New Yorkers should be talking about the "right to water" bill currently in the assembly that would require restaurants to provide free tap water.

Food Notes: 4/7: Quiche Quiche Lorraine, new food magazines, Veselka back to being all night and more

Quiche took America by storm in the 1960s thanks to Julia Child, and it took less than a decade for Americans to Americanize it with all sorts of other fillings.
