A black and white drawing showing two gentlemen fighting a duel. Both have raised and fired their pistols. Four other men are present. The scene is taking place in the middle of a wood.
#OnThisDay 1844 the Commons discussed the abolition of duelling. Four duels were said to have been fought in Britain in 1839 and four in 1840: api.parliament.uk/historic-han... One of the duels fought in 1840 was between two MPs, Edward Horsman and James Bradshaw.

I’m fracking polite, okay?
Speaker Johnson has literally said he's "not promising anyone anything."
For once, I believe him.

Happy Halloween! Here's evidence of the time I tried to carve a turnip! Believe me, pumpkins are so much easier!
Pumpkins were not common in England, Scotland or Ireland, but folks did carve turnips or beets into lanterns to scare the dead away on this day of thinned veils between worlds
Congrats!

This is what Dems are drawing attention to and want fixed. Now, not later.

A white bandage featuring sketches of how to bandage various wounds.
I love this bandage from c.1900 featuring illustrations on how to wrap wounds resulting from accidents involving a soldier, a sailor, a miner, and a woman whose clothes have caught fire. This amazing object is part of the Wellcome Collection in London.
The last time troops policed America was in the 1770s.
We fought a revolution against that king, and wrote into the Constitution the Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments to prevent it from ever happening again.
Pass it along…
Thank you, Boston Globe. This is how it's done.

A carving of a plague doctor wearing a beaked mask, long robe, gloves, and a brimmed hat. He's also holding a pole, and he has a little satchel.
Next time you visit York, take note of this carving of a plague doctor outside York Minster Cathedral. It was recently carved out of magnesian limestone to replace figures eroded by time, as part of the ongoing restoration of the East Front. I love this little fellow.
