A toll on the Strait of Hormuz isn’t technically a carbon tax, but ... it still kind of is?
@robinsonmeyer.bsky.social does the math of what Trump’s latest astounding act of climate policy means:

I am getting a lot of questions about whether Trump's threats alone are illegal. The answer is yes.
1. First, Additional Protocol I states “Acts or threats of violence the primary purpose of which is to spread terror among the civilian population are prohibited.” (also DOD LOW Manual §5.2.2)

People who say you can't use an electric car in cold weather need to know that Norway is the world leader in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with over 95% of new car sales being fully electric as of early 2026.
feeling doomerish about bluesky pbc abandoning a potential “communities” primitive in favor of focusing on live events.
the “feeds” primitive sucks and is undercooked. it must be a few months of work to turn it into “communities”, but it kept getting kicked down the road, and i doubt it’ll happen
They are complementary. There are essentially 0 drugs approved that didn't rely on NIH R&D. But NIH funding alone cannot deliver drugs, because NIH funding discovers new biology, but pharma R&D discovers the actual **drugs** (small molecule, monoclonal antibody) that modulates the biology.
"Bridge day" is a logical extension of the whole of Trump's promise to Americans from the start of his campaign 11 years ago: he'll use the state to kill the hated other and he'll do it without apology.
Repealing the Hague Invasion Act and nullifying Trump v United States have to be central planks.
i don't really know about other industries, but with software i have got to say that refusal to use ai at any place in development is acceptance of inability to compete. at the same time, refusal to maintain standards and quality through manual work is also acceptance of inability to compete.

@streets.boston.gov can you fix the lights and install red light cameras at the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Ritchie street?
I’ve been nearly hit/grazed on 3 separate occasions by drivers speeding into a left turn or racing through a red light.

We can’t lose sight of this.
Our President cut health care, cancer research, and food for hungry families.
And then turned around to spend billions on war.

Changes that Republicans made to SNAP will kick a lot of people off food stamps starting April 1.
If you can, please support your local food bank.

Announcing a deal to pay $1 billion to stop two wind farms, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said: “The era of taxpayers subsidizing unreliable, unsecure energy is officially over.”
Hours later, a massive American oil refinery accidentally exploded, spiking gas prices nationwide
The war in Iran has hit Americans at the pump. It’s another reason to turn to renewable energy. www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...
Map of the lower 48 United States showing 0.25° GFS run from 18z on 20 March 2026. The variable is the 500 hPa geopotential height percentile rank considering ERA5. There is a record-breaking ridge across the Western U.S.
Honestly, this historic heat dome across the West is really hard to put into words for me. Temperatures over 110°F (43°C) in March, shattering all-time monthly records on multiple consecutive days, and not just by a little.
➡️ I can confirm this is human-caused climate change.

Nature polled ~1,200 scientists and found 46% had a second income during their PhD. 59% said economic anxiety would push them toward a side hustle. Stipends in the US, UK, and Canada are at or below the poverty line in expensive cities www.nature.com/articles/d41...
ICML requires authors to serve as reviewers. Reviewers aren't supposed to use LLMs (with caveats 🧵). ICML used prompt injection to catch reviewers using LLMs. And now they have desk rejected the papers submitted by those reviewers.

As a rare climate scientist working in Silicon Valley, I've been drinking from the AI firehose a lot more than my peers. I thought it would be helpful to lay out my experiences of both the promise and pitfalls of using AI to accelerate scientific research:
I am running a Climate Dynamics reading group for UCI graduate students this Spring and would like to propose a list of accessible papers on "big ideas" in climate dynamics from the 21st Century, prioritizing primary sources over review papers.
Any suggestions of papers? (Self-promotion welcome!)

BIG ROCK says: *long lists of reasons why RFK Jr. should be impeached.* Kid rock says: "Bawitdaba da bang da bang diggy diggy diggy." DON'T TRUST KID ROCK. STOP RFK JR. Contact Your Rep standupforscience.net/impeach-rfkjr
RFK Jr. never directed a public health department, run a medical center, or held any public office related to health administration, and never managed a health crisis. But he worked out and drank whole milk in a hot tub with Kid Rock. We need someone better as head of the HHS.
Calling the SAVE Act voter ID is a trick. This bill would force Americans to show a passport or birth certificate in person to an election official.
❌ 146 million Americans don’t have a passport
❌ As many as 69 million women don’t have a birth certificate that matches their married name

The Missing Semester of your CS education [MIT IAP 2026] - https://missing.csail.mit.edu
In January, @anishathalye.bsky.social, @josejg.bsky.social, and I returned to @csail.mit.edu to teach Missing Semester, a class on topics we miss from most CS programs—tools and techniques that everyone should know, like Bash, Git, CI, and AI tools. Today, we’re releasing the course for free online!
This one hits hard.
The American president is more insulated from accountability than a British royal.
Our political system provides the elite with immunity. It has to change.
RFK Jr/MAHA disciples, you got PLAYED.
And everyone else saw it coming except you.
You deserve an AI plan that will protect you, your kids, your work, and our democracy.
That's what my plan would do and that's why the AI billionaires seeking unchecked power at your expense want to stop it.

The AI industry is deeply dependent on exponential growth to justify the colossal investments being made into it. To say AI is small now so it’s not a huge part of the story has about the wisdom of ignoring the family of mice that just moved into your grain cellar because there’s only a few of them.
The pace at which US wealth concentration is rising is simply staggering
The concentration of AI wealth into the hands of a few tech barons + plutocratic capture ==> unchartered territory
