AI is Morally Bankrupt — ANDREA PHILLIPS // secret.works So far I’ve been making the case against AI with cold, hard numbers: error rates, bottles of water evaporated, dollars invested. Now it’s time to move into a more subjective — and yet to my mind, far…

"...the very structure of a corporation, which exists as a “person” so that the actual people who own it can’t be held accountable for its actions. Which is an ongoing and catastrophic injustice for society, because you can’t send a corporation to prison no matter what harm it’s done."

Unsubscribed from a thing I never subscribed to, and on their farewell page it said, "I guess resistance isn't for everyone." Well, fuck off! You and your org are not the be-all end-all, you narcissistic dipsticks. Good riddance.

Photo of a young black wolf in the spring molting fur phase. His body nearly fills the frame, and his back half is busy molting faded brownish fur, with chunks of black fur showing through. His head is turned toward the photographer, ears up, golden eyes glowing.

Holy socks, I interact with a lot of environmental orgs. On Earth Day they email you seven times each, and my Inbox is hell.

Er, Happy Earth Day, I mean! Here's a photo of a wolf I took in Yellowstone a few years back as payment for my whining.

First of all, bird.

Second of all, bird.

Mostly importantly, bird. 🪶

Spotted on today's walk around the WB lot: Bugs Bunny running from one hedge to another in the Rose Garden, white tail flashing; two bare trees on dollies; Stage 19 with the elephant doors open blasting "Say That You Love Me" by Fleetwood Mac as drills whirr, the scent of freshly cut wood.

Prediction Market upgrades:
- Which circle of hell will Trump's soul be sucked into?
- Will Nina get that last bit of matted fur off of Sadie's butt?
- Date that proof of tree sentience is announced.
- which skinny boy loser owner of a prediction market will say "decentralized opinions" first today.

Next best thing is watching it w/someone who hasn't seen it before. I rewatched JAWS on the big screen a few years ago. Near the end, as the shark chomped on Quint, a woman behind me began to scream. Everyone in the audience started nodding and laughing sympathetically. We are one in terror.

The book cover of How to Commit a Postcolonial Murder with the author's name "Nina McConigley, author of Cowboys and East Indians" at the bottom. The image is of a large bottle of anti-freeze on an orange table and pink and orange wallpaper on the wall behind it. The wallpaper has tiny buffaloes on it. A hand with pink nailpolish on the nails grips the handle of the bottle.

I gobbled up How to Commit a Post Colonial Murder by Nina McConigley, which captures a certain type of 80s childhood I felt in my bones, even as she showed me the unique perspective of a mixed race girl growing up in Montana. Unique, observant, gripping, poetic. Highly recommend.

Glad for all the romantasy readers who're living in their golden age but when will fiction drenched in unsentimental cynicism starring women who give no fucks be on trend again (asking for myself and my career)

The 11 most challenged books of 2025, according to the American Library Association The ALA says 4,235 titles were challenged at U.S. libraries — the second-highest year on record. Forty percent of the challenged works involved LGBTQ+ subjects or the experiences of people of color.

As the editor of a book on this list, allow me to say again that book banning is a catastrophe for freedom of speech in America. There is no silver lining. It's all harm.

You can fight back by calling your reps to demand they vote against HR 7661, which is effectively a national book banning bill.

Two older women (probably my age) out for walks just crossed paths on the sidewalk outside my home, each holding their phone in front of them, talking loudly to their speakerphone.

In my best jolly tone, I shouted out a celebratory: "HEADPHONES!" but neither looked up.

A panel from a comic of Lying Cat, a pointy eared, giant blue-gray cat, with her mouth open, eyes like angry slits, saying the one thing she says, because she always knows: "Lying."

Yes. I know. My friend seemed to think none of that was possible. But of course it is. It will take time and effort, but it's all very possible, particularly passing the law, once things change politically. And they will, one way or another.

Today a friend I love told me sadly that the right to abortion in the US is "gone forever" and like, dude, NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS. Fuck your complacency, and let's pass a law.

We've put together a letter calling for stronger reporting, more accountability, and a real commitment to nonlethal coexistence in the state!
