While very early into adopting these practices, I can say that I already feel mental bandwidth and clarity emerging, something that I believe is so deeply needed given the horror and harm that the rich and greedy are enabling in the world.
5. Turned off notifications on all devices.
4. Enabled an auto-reply for email that has set “office hours” to let folks know when they can expect a response to their message.
3. Turned on the grayscale feature on my phone to further dissuade/wean myself off the urge to engage with it. I’ll note that I stopped using my phone as an alarm in my bedroom years ago in favour of an old school alarm clock and love it.
2. Kept apps on the phone that, for now, don’t have algorithms that encourage doom-scrolling/invite performative outrage. These include: Bluesky, Discord, Mastodon (also trying to figure this one out).
1. Deleted all time-sucking apps from my phone, including: email, Instagram, threads (debating the best approach with these by the way - welcome your input, especially from artists who use it for promo/community engagement).
While there are several areas where Apple maintained consistent excellence in 2024, I can't think of a single area where Apple levelled up. Not one. That feels like a problem.
