Richard Shaw and Max Rashbrooke - Past, present, and possible futures
Richard Shaw and Max Rashbrooke - Past, present, and possible futures Authors Max Rashbrooke and Richard Shaw have both written about their settler-colonial ancestors. In this conversation, facilitated by Massey University’s Dr Carolyn Morris, they discuss the challenges associated with this particular form of non-fiction writing, and the consequences their historical backstories have not only for their own lives, but for the ways in which they make sense of the country they live in today. Recorded live at Palmerston North Library for Heritage Festival 2026.

Our final video from Heritage Festival 2026 is now live!

This is Richard Shaw in conversation with Max Rashbrooke, talking about their writing which addresses the colonial history of their respective families, facilitated by Dr Carolyn Morris. This was a fascinating, and powerful conversation!

Professor Richard Shaw - MMP 30 years on: has it delivered?
Professor Richard Shaw - MMP 30 years on: has it delivered? In 1996 New Zealanders voted under the new mixed-member proportional (MMP) electoral system for the first time. Tired of old electoral rules which routinely handed power to either National or Labour, even when they won less than 50% of the vote and disenchanted with governments which routinely abused their electoral mandates, many citizens hoped the new system would usher in a different style of politics. Three decades down the track, Professor Richard Shaw, Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University asks: Have things worked out that way? What, if anything, has changed? And what is the future for not only MMP, but the wider political system in Aotearoa New Zealand? Recorded live at the Palmerston North Library for Heritage Festival 2026

The second of our Heritage Festival videos is out now: Professor Richard Shaw looks at 30 years of MMP and asks, has it delivered?

Graham Slater - The Lagoons at Awapuni
Graham Slater - The Lagoons at Awapuni Hokowhitu (Centennial) Lagoon is the last remaining “oxbow” lagoon within the Palmerston North city boundary. U3A New Zealand history coordinator Graham Slater will share some of the stories of a number of other such lagoons in the city, including those at Awapuni. These lagoons, originally created by a shifting river bed, have all since disappeared. However, remnants of all of them are still clear to see once you know what to look for. This video was recorded live at Boho Cafe in Palmerston North as part of Heritage Festival 2026.

The first of our videos from Heritage Festival 2026 is up now! If you missed Graham Slater's talk on the lagoons at Awapuni that is now up on our Youtube channel for your viewing pleasure. We'll be putting out more videos later this week.
