In time, Nick hopes to further enhance the brook by introducing large woody material. This would diversify the flow and provide complex habitat for brown trout and many other wildlife species. Need free or subsidised help with improving your river? Look no further: www.wildtrout.org/content/advi...

The Devil's Brook in Dorset had been straightened and perched in the past, hampering its ecosystem. Our Conservation Officer Nick Lawrence, in partnership with the landowner and Cain Bio-Engineering, has been returning the river to a more sinuous course that is better connected to the floodplain π§
For a rural headwater, Malham Beck has been substantially altered over the centuries. By tackling some of these historic modifications, Jonny has returned the river to a more natural course and reconnected it to its floodplain. Watch the video: youtu.be/8sYZAf0fEjM
Blue sky, clear water, and fascinating facts - our new video gives a glimpse of Malham Beck! π§ For several years now, Jonathan Grey (our Research & Conservation Officer) has been working to improve the health of this river, in partnership with @yorkswildlife.bsky.social.

Jonny pulled out defunct pipes, dismantled old revetments, and returned parts of the river to a more sinuous course. Most notably, he placed 48 trees (complete with rootballs) into the main channel, and 18 root plates into a smaller tributary: www.wildtrout.org/wttblog/a-wi...
Last autumn, we teamed up with the site's new custodians, Oxygen Conservation, to improve the health of the river. Our Conservation Officer Jonathan Grey produced a report outlining his recommendations, and then quickly got to work.
In the rolling landscape of the Yorkshire Dales, individual valleys can feel like their own hidden pockets of nature. Such is the case for Swineley Farm β a 500-acre plot that contains 1.5km of a River Ure tributary called Widdale Beck.
From 22-29 April, all campaign donations up to our Β£5,000 target will be doubled, thanks to our match funder PlanAid. So our charity could take home an incredible Β£10,000!
In the meantime, read more about how your donation could make a difference for our rivers: donate.biggive.org/campaign/a05...
There's just one week until the start of the @biggive.bsky.social Earth Raise campaign! π We're raising funds to secure specialist equipment for our Conservation Officers, including drones for aerial surveys and electric chainsaws for habitat creation.
As Rob explains, this is a fantastic example of why marginal vegetation is so important for juvenile brown trout. The fry are very vulnerable, so having access to cover along the river's edge can make all the difference πΏ
At this time of year, keep an eye on the margins of your local river - you may spot some beautiful brown trout fry! Our Conservation Officer Rob Mungovan had this brilliant sighting in a Wiltshire chalk stream just a few days ago π
The series unflinchingly relates the extraordinary efforts of Windrush Against Sewage Pollution, to unearth skullduggery in the water industry. In a new blog, our Director Shaun Leonard shares his thoughts on the events depicted, and their implications for rivers: www.wildtrout.org/wttblog/dirt...
After years of depressing headlines and justified public outrage, sewage pollution is once again being discussed nationwide. If you're concerned about the health of our rivers, you've probably seen the @channel4.bsky.social series, 'Dirty Business', which makes for worthwhile (if sobering) viewing.
So to give you another chance to treat yourself, weβre holding a Mini Auction! For this week only, you can use our auction website to place your bids. The Mini Auction Lots will start closing sequentially from 3pm on Sunday 29 March: auction.wildtrout.org
Weβre so grateful to everyone who supported the auction, and to the kind people who donated this year's 447 amazing Lots. If you missed out, we have some exciting news to share: a few of those fantastic Lots are still available, and we have four new ones that were donated later.
After a busy 10 days of bidding, our 2026 Spring Auction has drawn to a close. Thanks to the generosity of our bidders, we've raised an incredible Β£105,699 so far! These funds will enable us to do important conservation work across the UK and Ireland.
The return of spawning salmon to the River Ecclesbourne is a huge win, as we work to restore 100,000 acres of land and water!
Together with NestlΓ© UK and Ireland, @wildtrouttrust.bsky.social, and Chatsworth Estate we've bypassed the Poston Mill weir and reconnected 28km of river π§
#WorldWaterDay
Itβs the last day of our annual auction! If youβve had your eye on something special, now is the time to make your move π We have 447 wonderful Lots, including art, books, days out, expert-tied flies, and fishing in the UK, Ireland, and overseas. Lots start closing from 3pm: auction.wildtrout.org
This latest find further indicates that barrier removal can be effective at reconnecting fragmented river habitats. The benefit will be felt by not only salmon, but also brown trout, grayling, chub, dace and other fish that migrate throughout their lives. Read more: www.wildtrout.org/news/atlanti...
Our Deputy Director, Tim Jacklin, has been working to improve various Derwent tributaries for several years. His projects to remove and bypass barriers on the River Ecclesbourne, for instance, contributed to adult salmon returning to their historic spawning grounds in the river's upper reaches.
Incredible news from Derbyshire: an Atlantic salmon has been found in the Bottle Brook for the first time on record! The juvenile fish was found by @trentriverstrust.bsky.social during a survey π The UKβs Atlantic salmon have been declining for decades, and were declared endangered in 2023.
If you're keen to explore the potential of your local river, our Conservation Officers can help. Our Advisory Visits are free for England, and subsidised for the rest of the UK and Ireland: www.wildtrout.org/content/advi...
These surveys form part of a project led by @belfasthills.bsky.social and the Crumlin & District Angling Association. The project aims to establish a 'green corridor' from the river's source in the Belfast Hills to its mouth at Lough Neagh.
Our work took us to Northern Ireland this month π§ Gareth Pedley has been undertaking walkover surveys of the Crumlin River catchment, identifying pressures on water quality, water quantity and habitat availability. His report will also highlight ways to improve the river for fish and other wildlife.
We're so grateful for this kind gesture of support for our work. In celebration of an exceptional man, Steveβs friend Chris McCully shares his fond memories in a new guest blog: www.wildtrout.org/wttblog/in-m...
Whether guiding clients on the Wharfe or pursuing trout on Malham Tarn, Steve's passion inspired everyone around him.
We were honoured to receive a very thoughtful gift of Β£265 in his memory, which was donated by his wife Barbara and some of his many firm friends.
In December, the fly fishing world lost a legend with the passing of Steve Rhodes - a lifelong champion of wild fish, and a great ally of our charity. As an unwavering advocate for rivers, Steve's approach to fishing was informed by a deep knowledge of ecology.
Thank you so much for your support! π
