Week 11: From Education to the Labor Market
24 hours before you write, spend one day noticing how people on campus talk about internships, jobs, or recruiting, or reflect on the information you receive from the university or firms about career options.

Write down one specific interaction you observed (who said what, where, what happened – i.e. provide concrete detail). Now, apply Rivera – use at least one concept (options include, but aren’t limited to, “fit,” cultural matching, polish). What is being rewarded, and how, if at all, does this relate to Khan’s concept of ease?

A new experiment, suggested by a student: I fed my reading response prompt for @larivera.bsky.social's Pedigree to ChatGPT & Claude. I then sent the responses to students and encouraged them to outperform it.

Important work documenting the scale of the impact of ending birthright citizenship:
"we project 41 “unauthorized” births per 1,000 unauthorized Asians, compared with 17 “unauthorized” births per 1,000 among Latinos."

I'd put Degrassi somewhere in between Toronto and the Quaint Suburbs. It's not too far from the location of Kim's Convenience though (Moss Park)

Also feels like Scott Pilgrim should be in there somewhere but maybe it overlaps with nirvanna the band the show.

My latest paper out in AJS! I argue that Americans' immigration attitudes are shaped not just by cultural or economic considerations, but by perceptions of political (mis)alignment. That is, there is a logic of conditional inclusiveness that informs immigration attitudes. A thread below 🧵

Canada just released its 2025 Q4 migration numbers this afternoon. This means the tally is final - Canada had negative net migration in 2025: 133,642 more people left than arrived.

This is the *first time* Canada's had negative net migration since as far back as records go. 🧵

It'll be interesting to see what comes next. Canada has rolled out a lot of new policies this year, including a new promise to prioritize medical workers and educational workers. It'll def. take quite a while for trend to change, though, since the current admin. seems very cautious with immigration

A lot of the policy changes last year were, of course, the government trying to "correct the course" on the surge in immigration between 2020-23. Immigration had became a very unpopular issue, with a big increase in % of Canadians saying immigration is too high:

This American family doctor in Toronto is trying to get permanent residence. Canada’s new immigration rule has thrown him a curveball Age, lack of French and a rule change are obstacles for the U.S. family doctor, who has practised in Toronto for two years.

The decline is driven by non-permanent residents leaving, which is not surprising as Canada has raised its bar for permanent residency to a really high level for skill-based immigration in the last year. For example, doctors on work permits were not getting permanent residency:

see?
here's the thing. A lot of people are like, the earth is fucked, it's beyond salvation, it's hit the tipping point, but time and time again we see that if we just fucking fixed the problem, it rebounds so incredibly fast. Imagine what could be done if people actually cared

Vote for Your Favorite (and Least Favorite) Red Carpet Looks from the Oscars (Gift Article) You’ve seen the fashion from the Oscars red carpet. Now, the Styles desk wants you to rank your favorites.

Found it interesting that as we scroll down in poll, the sample size gets smaller (people stop voting because they lose patience; makes sense) but the % Nays also increases by a lot (starting with #18 it's all dominated by Nays)? So patience w/ survey is correlated with more negative opinions?
