NCAR is quite literally our global mothership.

Everyone who works in climate and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources.

Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet.

Unbelievable.

NCAR is foundational scientific infrastructure. This is escalating the assault on climate science, and there is a direct line between this step and the loss of many human lives.

Climate denialism, empowered by nihilists and know-nothings, undermining science & destroying the evidence that they previously just rejected. Meanwhile, out here in WA, roads are sliding into rivers (an unprecedented weather event) b/c it’s too damn warm to be raining this hard for this long.

Time to repurpose #AGU25 as a mass mobilization in support of NCAR, NSF, NOAA, NASA, USGS, DOE BER, and the Congressional power of the purse.

Key misunderstanding I want to get ahead of: NCAR isn't really a government agency like NIH or NSF. It's one of the largest NSF grants in history, and is given to a non-profit org called UCAR, whose job is to make NCAR exist (www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/...). That means the buck stops with NSF right now

Does anyone know of a good writeup/course/presentation/etc. for contract negotiations for community-run events like volunteer-led conferences? I'd love to pass it along to various groups I volunteer with (and learn myself) as we get into sponsor contract negotiation season for the coming year.

Regular geometric shapes have a set mathematical definition. There's no way someone can wiggle around that legally. And you can't satisfy the legal reqs on equal pop sizes while somehow carving multiple separate cities into the same district (hello Austin/San Antonio) using a regular geometric shape

So I've had this idea bumping around in my brain forever, and I came across a few posts about gerrymandered districts that made me want to toss this out: What if the law was all districts must be a regular geometric shape such that each state picks one? E.g., state A picks hexagons. Stupid thought?

Definitely considering just driving there and back at this point. It's not a bad drive from my area (though long). It'll mean I get to make it home in the expected timeframe after without much fuss...
