In my latest post, I quickly review Gemma 4, Google's exciting new open models, but mostly focus on the questions around what makes an open model succeed in the long term.

I built a new Python CLI tool for scanning folders for secret strings, useful if you want to share a bunch of log files but first want to check they didn't accidentally leak API keys or similar. Run this command to learn more:

๐ Hello world
I'm gonna be really happy once we can publish the new OAuth & Atproto libraries the @germnetwork.com team have been hard at work on, because it will save so many reimplementation bugs
Getting a simple landing page ready for @nightd.ai. @zensical.org works really nicely, but support for the blog plugin is missed.

โgo back to the moon but this time we have really good camerasโ was a fantastic idea
Promotional graphic with a halftone purple-tinted photo background of a person working on a laptop. The Volt party logo appears top right. Large text reads: 'Imagine you can digitally start a company anywhere in the EU in 48h for โฌ100?' with 'digitally,' 'anywhere,' '48h,' and 'โฌ100' highlighted in yellow. A yellow banner below reads: 'That's what the EU Inc. is about.' A white circle arrow appears bottom right.
Infographic with purple background. Text reads: 'The EU Inc. would be a legal entity structure (the "28th regime") valid across all 27 EU Member States โ which is now a real legislative proposal.' 'EU Inc.' is highlighted in yellow and the final phrase is underlined in yellow. Below, a red banner reads: 'Butโฆ it still needs work.' A white circle arrow appears bottom right.
Infographic with purple background titled 'What's Good' in white text on a green banner. Three checkmark bullet points list: 'Regulation โ no national solo efforts,' 'Fast, digital & inexpensive company formation,' and 'ESOP taxation only at the exit event.' A halftone thumbs-up graphic appears bottom right, with a yellow speech bubble reading 'These are real victories for Europe's innovators.' A white circle arrow appears bottom right.
Infographic with purple background titled 'What's Missing' in white text on a red banner. Three red X bullet points list: 'No cross-border hiring,' 'No unified registration, courts creating uncertainty,' and 'No automatic license to operate.' Below, a yellow banner reads: 'Volt is pushing for a Europe where businesses grow without borders. Join today' with a purple heart emoji.
The new #EUInc proposal could make starting a company anywhere in the EU fast, digital, and affordable - a big win. But scaling across national borders still remains difficult.
Volt is pushing for a Europe where businesses can grow without national barriers.

The expected layoffs at Oracle to cut costs to pay for the AI datacenters to host OpenAI landed this morning, hitting 30,000 employees. Given Oracleโs 162K employees, this is an almost 20% reduction of headcount.
This follows a 30,000 layoff at Amazon and a 40% cut at Block in recent months.

Today we're launching Proton Meet: end-to-end encrypted video calls where no one can listen in, not even Proton. Built on the same zero-access architecture as Proton Mail. Read more: https://proton.me/business/blog/introducing-proton-meet
Probably has been rewritten by Claude Code ๐
Ironic how Anthropic sells Claude Code security reviews positioned as something v powerful (costing $15-25 per PR review), and being clear they use it on all PRs... then leaking all of Claude Code's code thanks to publishing their sourcemap.
AI won't save you from yourself!
Claude Code is now open source!!!
just kidding, Anthropic accidentally leaked the source and this guy put it up on github within an hour

I started migrating my open-source projects from Prettier & ESLint to oxfmt & oxlint.
oxlint works 3-4 times faster while using my JS-based third-party ESLint plugins.

amazing
We hear the concerns about AI. Our goal is to use this technology to give people greater control, not to generate content. Attie uses AI to help you create custom feeds without having to know how to code.
As I said elsewhere
I am basically radicalized about this. We fight now for personal computing and personal agency or we lose another decade to closed clouds
We push now for an open internet and open models. Nobody is going to hand it to us because theyโre nice
@thdxr.com when will we see @opencode.ai here?
At least for sharing releases.
As fossil fuel prices have shot up, itโs a good time to consider going electric. Iโve had an electric car for a decade and a heat pump for a year, and Iโm very happy with both โ simply all-around better technology than burning stuff. www.noahpinion.blog/p/maybe-you-...
