I mean look if I ever find good Fisher speakers they’re coming home with me. That’s the set I grew up with.

Not where it counts: my wallet

Good to know. Bummer to hear, but not entirely surprising given how many production choices are already shaped by digital / streaming requirements.

Yep! *Although* the word is there was a wave of remasters that have largely supplanted the CD-based versions that were available for download until recently and those remasters… made the band more earbud-friendly and crunched the dynamic range. Brothers in Arms the worst affected, ironically.

I was thinking of you today because I was listening to my high-res digital copy of Love Over Gold and see THAT sounded fantastic. Hard to imagine vinyl improving on it despite my love for Knopfler. But then I listen to Metric and it’s like someone else is riding the volume knob.

I have a passion for thorough research so yes.

No, believe it or not, I really never cared that much about vinyl. Digital was fine and still would be except that it’s impossible to ignore how flat and uninvolving a lot of rock albums have gotten compared to predecessors from the 70s / 80s or any decent jazz or classical release.

Anyone found joy on this path or is this mostly wishful thinking when it comes to more modern bands?

OhI think we’re there. This thing is going to be feeding into a preamplifier with a direct analog path to the amplifier.

To be clear, I am fully aware that lossless digital SHOULD be superior all things being equal. But the argument seems to be that worst-case scenarios are assumed for digital releases and vinyl gets versions tailored to better systems and listening environments.

Made it two tracks into Walkmen’s Bows & Arrows before I needed to find if there is ANY version of this album with some actual dynamic range because holy hell it was flat on streaming. Sound level meter barely twitched. Saw some suggestions that the vinyl pressings are not as compressed?

Cannot tell you how many times @cassmarshall.bsky.social would just hold me and @thederrit.bsky.social hostage explaining the pains the Minions movies took to explain how they missed WW2.

OK I’ll be honest I hadn’t really considered the vectors by which embracing that I’m the “anti-influencer” could come back to screw me.

Sometimes bad thoughts just set up shop in the conversation pit of your inner monologue, and the only way to evict them to is to give voice to them and inflict them on others.

At some point when I have less shame I might pull this out. Toss in some hashtags like “marriedlife” and “goals” and then tag McIntosh or Gold Note and see if I can scam some merch.

Thinking of the most insufferably bad taste audiophile thing I could post and here’s what I’ve got.

“After a lot of discussion and soul-searching about what it is we both want, MK and I have decided to separate... the components of our audio chain.“

I’m sorry, I needed it out there.

Yep! Also I’ll just grab something because I like director. “Oooh a Frankenheimer I haven’t seen? With Affleck, Theron, Sinise, and Farina? Reindeer Games MUST be good!”

AI got the blame for the Iran school bombing. The truth is far more worrying LLMs-gone-rogue dominated coverage, but had nothing to do with the targeting. Instead, it was choices made by human beings, over many years, that gave us this atrocity

Obviously the school strike in Iran is mostly the fault of an administration full of bloodthirsty assholes. But more directly Palantir‘s big military contribution appears to be to allow bloodthirsty assholes to act more recklessly and confidently by ignoring data www.theguardian.com/news/2026/ma...

<editing the Palantir manifesto> So… you’re PayPal guys, right? You sold a wire transaction service for the internet? And now you… want to reform western society? Sorry, was it JUST PayPal? Do you have other work you can point to? Cultural? Societal? You invested in Facebook? OK I’d leave that out.

Honestly I think Matthew was just trying to make me feel bad because he went Waingro when were in a losing position earlier and the other team said they were willing to talk and it cost us a pretty good run.
