A union could strengthen — not replace — faculty governance at USC - Daily Trojan Why USC Academic Senate veterans are voting yes on RTPC unionization.

The rhetoric of anti-union admins notwithstanding, the best way to strengthen faculty governance is to unionize your workplace. A bunch of my Academic Senate-veteran colleagues wrote about exactly this:

PIANO PIANO | Jennifer Clarvoe | Poetry - Unbound Edition Press In PIANO PIANO, Clarvoe crafts a luminous meditation on time, loss, and the enduring power of art to transform grief into grace. These poems move with the deliberate tempo their title suggests — piano piano, slowly, gently — through landscapes both intimate and archaeological, from a father's final breaths to ancient curse tablets unearthed in Turkish soil.

WE DID IT!

Our illegal union @uam-umd.bsky.social is a lot less illegal today. 12,000 contingent faculty in MD just won the right to collectively bargain. Life-changing win for teachers and students. Only happened bc thousands of people worked together to beat our bosses in the statehouse.

SECOND CLASS ANGEL

there’s a part of heaven
reserved for my kind. the sun don’t
grow there. the money don’t shine

it’s not about wings
altho chicken today feathers tomorrow
might be called a way of being

periodically
there’s a breakthru: one of us
gets over polishing halos

evidentially
status has endless ramifications
like an infinite pecking order

which suggests

the light
one moves toward ascending in death
is merely the non-reflective neon of God’s
corporate boardroom

Nasra Ahmed, a 23-year-old US citizen, was arrested and detained by ICE. She was held for TWO DAYS.

ICE agents handcuffed her, called her a racial slur, and she was knocked to the ground so hard she got a concussion.

This cannot continue happening. ICE needs to leave.

Judge Proposes Restricting Deportation of Scores of Noncitizen Academics

There is a substantial connection between the affective + social infrastructure you build in a good classroom and the counter-hegemonic sociality of academic union organizing, and someday I'd like to write about that. Venmo in bio
