Well, I’m leaning more towards garlic; figs are usually depicted in groups in baskets or bowls, and their colour is also much more distinct. Garlic would be a better fit here because there are only two of them, they’re quite large, and they’re rather pale in colour.

The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery We are delighted to announce that The Friends of The Potteries Museums & Art Gallery, helped by generous public donations, have raised £10,000 towards the acquisition Ellastone Dress Fastener. Thank you everyone who has donated towards this fantastic milestone. We are now closing this strand of the funding campaign.
Some great news - thank you to everyone who contributed their hard earned cash!
(Just a reminder that had the finder/ landowner donated the dress fastener, it would have cost £0 instead of £150,000...)

Archaeologists at Tel Azekah uncovered a 2,500-year-old reservoir filled with the remains of dozens of infants, raising unsettling questions about burial practices and social realities in ancient Judah.

A photo of the face of a young smiling girl. She has a bit messy, dark hair.
Four people standing in a line. A man in a suit, two girls in white dresses (the second is standing on a small chair), and a woman in a long evening dress.
20 April 1933 | A Dutch Jewish girl, Sophia Kaatje van Hasselt, was born in Oosterwolde.
In February 1943 she was deported to #Auschwitz together with her parents Simon and Geertje, and her older sister Hermi. None of them survived.
We are looking at the lid of a burr birch wood tankard carved with a very smiley lion confidently striding along with his curly tail up and a perfectly coiffured mane
We are looking at a photo showing a birch wood tankard showing a carved lion on the lid and smaller carved lions for feet. It has a very ornate lion? thumb piece. There is a stripe down the middle of the photo, we are not sure why - sorry!
Exciting derpy lion news!
We have found ANOTHER burr-birch wood tankard with a lion on it!
This one dates to 1766 and is also made in Norway.

What can coinage tell us about crisis? 🪙 The spatial pattern of finds from late antique Phanagoria (Black Sea, now Russia: pleiades.stoa.org/places/854724) indicate citizens dropping coin purses, likely during a fire while the city was besieged (Justinianic, 545-554 CE) arkeonews.net/6th-century-...

A detail of a geometric mosaic of squares in shades of black, green and white, giving a 3D effect. The border is open guilloche with coloured centres.
For this fine spring day (in the UK), shades of green. This simple, elegant mosaic is in the museum in Aquileia.

Mosaic of a lion in a rocky landscape clutching a leopard in it’s front paws. The lion has a fierce expression while the leopard looks fearful for what comes next. Now held in the MAN Napoli, inv. no. 114282.
✨Lion versus Leopard✨
This mosaic immediately captures your attention - the direct gaze of the lion forcing the leopard into submission is hard to miss. The mosaic has suffered some damage from subsistence over the years but feels acutely compelling even with the rough edges.
