Hard to believe that in what used to be one of world’s most prestigious newspapers, neither the NYT writers nor editors appear to know what the not-so-obscure acronym NATO stands for.
(Hint: it’s *not* the below)

BTW, a whopper like this probably would get you fired from a college paper in Ireland.

Families' debt 'nightmare' as thousands of retirement flats stand empty Relatives face

If we want older people to downsize why do we let retirement housing companies get away with this? Why would anyone buy one of their flats?

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

Question in Copenhagen: why is Trump focussed on a Russian threat that doesn't exist (in Greenland) as opposed to one where it does (Ukraine)?

We fought the greatest war in history, one that left countless millions, killed, starved, abused and traumatised precisely because idiot leaders insisted that there would be great advantages in controlling the incredible natural resources of other countries.

3 months ago 384 96 17 5

Very much all of this.
The many Brits bashing the capital are very useful idiots for overseas efforts to undermine the country imho.
As I've said before, it's time to push back at the nonsense

A Tale Of One City And Two Henry Smiths These two London landlords are separated by four centuries — but joined by a common name and business interests.

Set out six months ago to investigative some dubious evictions. Ended up writing a sprawling story spread over 450 years about London property deals, the ethics of money lending, Tommy Robinson, Barbary pirates, Jacobean earls, and wealth in the capital. www.londoncentric.media/p/henry-smit...

Oh excellent news. Brexit sovereignty strikes again.
‘Global’ Little Britain gets to plead with foreign powers not to screw us over. And foreign powers say no.

We will be doing this shit for years. What an idiotically avoidable waste of our time and resources.

Foreign powers are rubbing their hands as our negotiating position crumbles. Without a deal with the EU, we will have to sprint to countries such as the US and China to replace some of our lost trade. They will exact a hefty toll in return for helping us. That toll may be selling us chlorinated chicken or hormone-treated beef. It may be letting their private sector snap up pieces of our NHS. It may be something else. Whatever it turns out to be, we won’t enjoy paying it.

If you're going to drop into every post and reply "So what? Who's going to do something about it?", the answer is YOU. YOU are going to do something about it. YOU are the consequences. Stop waiting for someone else to save you.

America's richest 10% now hold 60% of the nation's wealth.

The bottom half of America? It holds just 6%.

Wealth inequality is eating this country alive.

I think the problem with Sir James Dyson- guest editor of the Today Programme today- is that he genuinely thinks that "inventive spirit" is enough to run an economy on. We can't all be entrepreneurs. We can't all invent a revolutionary new product. Also, for a "futurist" he's massively nostalgic.-

In 2023 I became obsessed with videos of dads in cargo shortswaiting in parking lots during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. So when she came to town, I grabbed a camera and headed down to talk to them. I thought it'd be funny. It turned out to be something else entirely.

Every year, people mock this tree. But I love it anyway.

It reminds us that if we stand together in tough times, we can overcome anything.

MAGA Zoomers didn't get there by themselves: Meta, YouTube, X pushed them there.

As long as we let the tech companies have unregulated, nontransparent algorithms, as long as they don't give people—and PARENTS—tools to improve their feeds, we're going to breed monsters

4 months ago 110 42 3 0

The algorithms aren't just breeding monsters on the right, or even pushing people to the right, though they are certainly doing that.

They reward rage and nihilism and disinformation of all kinds.

And nobody is helping kids understand that.

Fascintern Media We are facing a coordinated international fascist movement that works with explicit backing from Moscow, Washington, and tech monopolies, and is propagating itself through its own media apparatus. Yet...

2025 is coming to end and some people who claim not to be fascists are still associating themselves with fascist outlets like X.

I claim, perhaps charitably, that it's because they don't understand how the internet works. Either way, this needs to change.

As winter flooding looms, it's worth noting that a young street tree in an asphalt surface can prevent 60% of the rain that falls on it from reaching the ground, even when not in leaf.

Increasing the low levels of urban tree cover should be a strategic national priority.

In response to some of the comments:

If you agree with *all* the reporting of a news organisation that is both independent *and* non-partisan, then it's very unlikely to be independent and non-partisan.

This is true regardless of your politics.

Agreeing with all its reporting is the wrong test

To fix the BBC, focus on competence and cash Corporation fails to learn from criticism, while politicians have consciously reduced its scope for quality journalism

The impossible dream some people on the British right are chasing is that you can have a BBC News operation that retreats from detail and expertise, that takes dictation from the government, but this will only create incompetence and failure when it suits you:

Australia has so much solar that it's offering everyone free electricity Australia's extensive solar power penetration makes so much energy that the government wants to offer free electricity at peak hours.

Australia has so much electricity from solar power that it is going to start offering free electricity to everyone for at least three hours during the day as the wholesale price of power goes negative
