Dearly beloved: Ten years ago, Prince died. At the 2015 Grammys, Prince said “Albums still matter. Like books and Black lives, albums still matter. Tonight and always.” Wish he was with us now.

251 years ago today, America’s war against “Taxation without Representation" began, with the Battles of Lexington & Concord
Here in DC, that war never ended
DC pays more per capita in federal taxes than any other Americans, yet we have zero votes in Congress

It is Haiku Day
Syllables get counted but
DC votes do not

Earlier today at @NMAAHC, for Emancipation Day: DC’s own go-go legends Rare Essence!
The band is celebrating their 50th year in 2026, so they’re just one year younger than DC Home Rule!
On this date in 1862, slavery in the District was eliminated, and 3,100 enslaved people were freed. DC's Emancipation Day holiday commemorates this. #EmancipationDay
On this date in 1915, Walter Washington was born. He was our first Home Rule mayor, one of the very first Black mayors nationwide. Prior to that, as DC’s appointed mayor, after MLK's assassination, he refused federal orders to have police "shoot rioters."
On this date in 2019—Notre Dame Cathedral burned
On this date in 1912—the Titanic sank
On this date in 1865—President Abraham Lincoln died
On this date in 1947—Jackie Robinson broke the MLB color barrier
On this date in 1452—Leonardo da Vinci was born
What a day of history.
Check out our latest #HearingTheCouncil interview with Ward 1’s Brianne Nadeau. We get an update on the bottle bill, hear about her proposed reinvention of the Housing Production Trust Fund, discuss the Comp Plan, plus we tackle a this-or-that “fun round”

Happy Birthday and Emancipation Day Eve Eve Eve Eve Eve (5 "Eve"s!) to former At-Large/Ward 5 Councilmember Vincent Orange!
On this date in 2011, Mayor Vince Gray & a number of councilmembers—including Muriel Bowser, Tommy Wells, Yvette Alexander, Sekou Biddle & others—were arrested by US Capitol Police for blocking Constitution Ave to protest Congressional budget riders & to call for DC voting rights
The state of my inbox is good
Born on this date in 1947: Mark Plotkin. He passed away in 2019. From a DC politics standpoint, he played sort of a Tim Russert role. His plain-spoken, heart-on-his-sleeve truth, passion, & cantankerous advocacy are greatly missed.
We honored him in 2017: lims.dccouncil.gov/downloads/LI...
The full slide deck from today’s budget proposal presentation by the mayor is available here: mayor.dc.gov/page/mayor-b...
The mayor is providing a preliminary look at her budget proposal, delayed by a back-and-forth between the mayor and the CFO. The fully finalized budget will be formally submitted to the Council on Thursday.

On this date in 2020, we lost Darran Simon of the @washingtonpost. While local elected officials & the media are sometimes at odds, we’re really just one big family united in pursuit of the public good. We miss our departed family member, & mourn his loss

On this date in 2020, we lost the icon Faith. She worked on Broadway & in Hollywood, with Ethel Merman & Natalie Wood, & was chums with Brando. Perennial mayoral candidate. If she never interrupted you with her bugle...you were a nobody in DC politics.
