My wife is doing her first playthrough of OoT right now (on N64 hardware, no less), and she just got through the Water Temple over the weekend.

She leaned over to me yesterday and said "Can I tell you something? Aside from some frustration right at the beginning, the Water Temple wasn't that bad."
