The New Deal invested heavily in writers, photographers, artists, etc, to show the benefits of these programs for the American people. You sell policy like you do any other product. FDR understood that. I never have quite understood why so many of his successors failed to grasp this.

Losing SLACs (small liberal arts colleges) is absolutely a sign of American academia's decline and the gutting of the humanities in particular.
