like, i am not really a sentimental person, but how did these two full-sized, smart, funny, kind men grow out of those two tiny, slimy babies?
My sons turn 18 today and I’m taken aback by how emotional this is making me. 😭
McMaster has become the first university in Ontario to sign the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment, more familiarly known as DORA, which will allow us to better assess research contributions in terms of societal and community impact. news.mcmaster.ca/mcmaster-sig...
Gauging interest. I were to do a workshop on possible academias -- defined as ways of doing knowledge production and sharing, maybe other things, who knows -- who would want to participate? I'm interested in thinking together about how we could build new structures or understandings of this thing!
I have been working with some colleagues on a project about collaborative peer review, which might harmonize with this?
To be clear, I bear the blame in this scenario for assuming knowledge not taught in class!
A couple years ago I asked my linguistics students a question to prompt them to think about prototype theory (cf. "is a hot dog a sandwich"). The question was not very effective, because I had assumed they would know that bats are not birds.
FWIW when I do this it’s because I want to signal the option to refuse the invitation. If the “opportunity” is less optional I would frame it as a request instead.
I feel like maybe this is something Chris Kennedy worked on with his adjective stuff in the early 00s?

OOTD for today’s International Women’s Day event on campus supplied by the @academicaunties.com merch store.
I am trying to fix my heart, but I confess to feeling a little salty that International Women's Day has added several additional responsibilities to my week, taking time away from my responsibilities directing a women's and gender studies program.
This makes me think of @awesomebiota.bsky.social ‘s collection.
Thanks for surfacing this, Jila. As I read the news (and the Discourse) I’ve been wondering how Iranians in and outside of Iran are feeling.
Oh, and Xe Sands narrating Emily Danforth’s Plain Bad Heroines!
Lauren Groff’s Matrix, narrated by Adjoa Andoh. So delicious.
I was trying to describe it to a colleague while reviewing applications to a grad program. I landed on “highly polished but very vague”.
And all the more determined to interrupt the ugh cycle!
Yeah the undercurrent of ugh is now much more overt. And at the same time I’m all the more thankful for the mentors who weren’t in the ugh.
Thank you for putting this in writing. I hope and trust your words will help spur us to keep working to eliminate these behaviours and attitudes.
I just sent the third one!
yellow! trousers!
And honestly, when is it ever really a <24hr turnaround? This is a linguistics department, not an ICU.
I wore mine to work this week!

Enjoy!
I too am not fan of travel but OTOH it’s pretty easy to get from YHZ to Montreal , Ottawa, Toronto, where there’s a big variety of art & cultural experiences. And it’s a lot simpler than international travel!
You’ve posted occasionally about your art classes. A few years ago I stayed taking private singing lessons and it has been an immense joy.
I’m guessing your students were already aware of the relative goodlookingness of their profs…
