I miss not being on Boston on Patriots Day...

Coach K's grandson got behind the wheel - while drunk - and killed a 15-year old kid riding a bike over the weekend... today he was charged with a misdemeanor instead of a felony.
Really?!?
They are talking like traffic engineers haven't been trying - and failing - to fix traffic congestion for the last 70+ years
It's the wrong question to ask
And a good part of the reason we're in the mess that we're in
Hard maybe...
I was biking in a very different part of the Denver region the other day - one that if you look at the background clearly isn't meant for biking - but I came across this amazing sticker decorating the beg button...
Banning bikes in a Rhode Island beach town?
To be fair, he later said he was joking
But, to be honest, I really don't think he was
As much as @davidzipper.bsky.social and I push back on treating Waymo's improved safety as a given, they are still light years ahead of this nonsense
A snippet from the new episode, out later this week:
What happens when car companies exaggerate what their driver assistance systems can do?
Misled consumers take dangerous risks, assuming their car will keep them safe.
NHTSA and the FTC never should’ve allowed this to happen.
We'll be recording the next episode live on YouTube in less than 2 hours...
It makes perfect sense that 'car bloat' safety discussions focus on big SUVs & pickup truck
But this NY Times essay complaining about how expensive our most basic cars have become also points out that sedans are much bigger & much more powerful than they used to be
This is not safety neutral
Do you think @davidzipper.bsky.social realizes that this is one of mine?
I agree that a bit more incline would help... and a few of those bollards have already taken a beating (which shows why they are useful)
Love coming back to a part of town that I haven't seen in a while & finding an intersection changed for the better.
Nice work Denver DOTI...

As far as I could tell, it is not a state DOT roadway (the parallel road is)
That could definitely be part of it
I think it's also true that a lot of things (like cars) tend to cost more when you have less money and less stability
The dealership might've been willing to lease him a car only with somewhat predatory terms given what they perceived as risk
Excited to be getting started on a transit plan for the Denver region. www.rtd-denver.com/community/ne...
You are totally right... it's been a minute since I dug into that paper!
Back in 2019, Alejandro Henao and I estimated net hourly wages ranging between $5.72 and $10.46 for Uber & Lyft drivers
(minimum wage was $11.10 in Colorado at the time)
The question @nytimes.com asks shouldn't be: how can this family of 3 can afford to live in NYC on $25k per year?
The better question would be: how is it possible that Uber only pays him $25k per year when he drives 60 hours each week?!?
"Meaningful progress toward Vision Zero in the United States requires acknowledging that land use decisions—not just street design—are a primary driver of the elevated risk faced by vulnerable road users."
Yup.

Holy hell...
As I tell my students, no need for that adverb
Garagarchitecture
(as seen earlier today on Bainbridge Island)
gesundheit
If you happen to be in Wenatchee tomorrow, come see me talk & show pictures of streets & such on a really big screen...
(I promise that it'll be way better than that sounds.)
