You know what they say: what happens in the delta quadrant cannot be prosecuted by court martial in the alpha quadrant

At the #PENLitAwards, we took the chance to ask some of the best writers around to share (if they would) their best (and their worst) writing advice. Here's what we heard.

From Instagram, @clubchicxulub.bsky.social will be posting, (among other writers’ excellent works), my first ever narrated short story in their Pandæmomium issue!

This story was the craziest idea I ever came up with. Just days away, keep those eyes peeled 👀

Reintroducing Club Chicxulub!

We’re a celebration of fabulist literature, art, and music. Our performance series and literary journal features writers and their stories, accompanied by a soundtrack of synthwave, darkwave, and ambient beats.

Managed 7000 words since Sunday and can’t decide if this is a good thing or a sign that I’m not challenging myself enough as I draft this new concept (or I’m still in the fun act 1 flow when everything is sunshine and daisies)

Will always appreciate your unprecedented response times, virtually unmatched in the lit mag world. Where other mags take six months, I’ve never been left wondering more than a few days

That’s totally fair. I’m waiting for someone to come out with an actual tool to detect AI so we can put this whole thing to bed and those who want slop can have their slop and the rest of us can read human works, but I’m not holding my breath.

I can only imagine you have the world’s best-honed senses for detecting AI stories at this point. There are plenty of self proclaimed experts citing indicators of generated stories, but I’d be super interested in what you notice if you ever wanted to vent some steam on substack…

I would say I’m a chronic planner, I outline heavily, do character webs and list out worldbuilding in @milanote.bsky.social and then reference that as I write, but I don’t edit while I’m drafting~

As much as I hate to admit it, every day when I’m ready to dive into a new chapter but I CAN’T because I have to work actually improves the final result.
Things simmer out of spite and ideas come to me and the final is tighter and richer than it would have been~

Diving back into blender after a year of not using the tool, and it’s already in 4.5 (I was working in 3.0😭) is exhausting! There’s keyboard shortcuts I KNOW exist that I CANNOT find. Very frustrating~

Update! We’re working on the least developed idea for a novella because it’s exciting and interesting and more productive than diving into sequels for books that have not been queried yet!!

This was something I tried to address in my first manuscript, Edge of Eden. The computer offers to help her with her poetry but she decides the reason she’s writing it is to figure out what compelled her to want to write it in the first place

You should give a lucky 10% a devastating “Unfortunately, your piece is TOO good for TBQ and it is with a heavy heart we have rejected your work because we don’t deserve it” just for fun.

I’ll probably end up canning for the one I’ve done the most outlining on actually, the sequel to my last project, not that I think about it

The hardest part about finishing a project is juggling which one of the other 4 ideas I have is worth pursuing next - against the opportunity cost of not doing the other three 😭
