I'm building a multiplayer web browser - would love to connect & compare notes !
not sure wht happened to the suit!
also fun fact the way I found out that project was in harvard, I met a talented woman Natalie at sxsw who studied subservient chicken in school and then became Pee-wee Herman’s PR agent and she asked if she could bring him to our party & we all became fast friends
i would do that next time i am there! probably next year
the cost of the chicken suit was covered bc it was in a now-forgotten tv ad, we borrowed an apartment, shot it ourselves I think we did it all for 50k, we def put wayyy more time into it than the budget allowed but we absolutely knew it was wild and totally worth it, just needed to get away with it
there was an ad agency that did a tv commercial with the subservient chicken, that was the expensive thing, and the website (as far as BK was concerned) was just some little microsite to go along w the campaign, we had different plans clearly, and just went for it and somehow nobody stopped us
happy to answer more questions and yeaaaah like 15 years of creating chaos
- it definitely was supposed to feel like an Adult Situation
- I have the source files ;)
- we shot in HD with sound and good lighting and then I ended up deleting the sound and compressing the shit out of it and rendering it at 3fps to hide the cuts & that worked really really well
- at one point this website was part of the harvard business school marketing curriculum
- for a week or so there was a debate if it was live/real or not
- someone figured out how to grab the keyword list and published that which caused a ruckus but also drove more traffic
- we just did our best to match the clip to a keyword, turns out it doesnt have to be totally correct to feel fun just needs to be close
- we had a LOT of naughty words in the list and it would give you a no-no response to the bad words, but that meant it knew the words so that was fun
- it really took off on LiveJournal which was the spot to share things at the time
- a week after launch it made it into the 5 minute CNN news reel in the cafe car on the amtrak from boston to nyc - for a website in 2005 this was insane
- theres a bit over 400 video clips in there and ~20k keywords
I have stories @panic.gay!
- the actor got too claustrophobic so the guy in the suit was the costume designer (from legendary shop Stan Winston)
- burger king signed off on screenshots & had *no idea* what we were really doing, but it was literally an overnight hit so they couldn’t take it down
