So proud of this campaign! 80% reduction in a rent hike for nearly 300 households, families kept in their homes and a community staying together. Nobody does it quite like ACORN ✊

🚨 With Awaab’s Law coming into effect & the Renters' Rights Bill due to become law later this year, this is a crucial time to make sure renters’ voices are heard.

third of renters could be 'forced out of their homes' despite landmark reforms Labour’s significant Renters' Rights Bill, which is currently passing through Parliament, will ban landlords from evicting renters for no reason from their homes - but fears remain

This is exactly why the Government must move to tackle rising rents, including by capping in-tenancy rent rises, if upcoming reforms are to be effective at ending unfair evictions.

Bills are rising, debts are rising, bailiff profits are rising. They're a stain on our country, and we've had enough.

In the 1920s, Vienna started to build lots of high quality social housing. Unlike the UK, it didn't stop.

Today, more that 60% of the city's population lives in beautiful and affordable social housing like this...

Great thread from our Head Organiser @nickballard.bsky.social👇

Vienna is proof of what can be achieved through a political commitment to housing as a basic right, rather than solely as a financial investment!

Many developments have communal facilities such as parks, gyms, social clubs, and swimming pools.

The only requirements for accessing social housing are meeting an income cap that 75 percent of the population qualifies for, and having lived in the city for two years.

Today, rent in Vienna is around three times cheaper than in the
UK, with tenants enjoying strong protections, including lifetime security of tenure and even the ability to pass on rental contracts to family members.

Rents were capped at 3.5% of the average workers' wage, and tenants were granted full security of tenure.
After the WW2, Vienna continued to build high-quality, affordable public housing. While other places began selling off social housing in the 80s and 90s, Vienna resisted.

Communal apartment buildings, were designed by famous architects using modern design principles and innovative building materials. Although intended for workers, these buildings were designed to be indistinguishable from private buildings housing the city's bourgeoisie.

From 1919 to 1934, Vienna's socialist municipal government implemented a comprehensive program to construct affordable housing for the masses (🧵).

There’s no reason why a landlord would need a huge amount of rent in advance other than greed. No one would expect you to pay for 6 months of food shopping up front!

It’s a huge step in the right direction that this is now being abolished - no wonder the landlords don’t like it!
