I've tried to explain this to Republicans in my community and the conversation just stalls, because it's not about rationality or logic. It's about identity. If they admit this is a bad idea, they're not good Republicans anymore, and they don't know what else they can be.

The NH GOP are going after student IDs here for the same reason.

Because the real aim is to reduce the population of US voters. The GOP knows they can't win in a fair election. They only hold on to power if they disqualify or overwhelm more of us to keep us from the polls.

This bill puts a substantial burden on US voters and we're all supposed to be fine with that because it'll keep non-citizens from voting - a problem that does not exist and already has legal recourse.

The fact is that voting by non-citizens in the US is already a felony, and instances of it are vanishingly small. The only documented case in NH in the last 20 years was a British citizen who got confused about voting laws (he thought he could vote as a property owner.)

And let's not forget that the bill also requires states to turn over their voter rolls. Let's watch the Trump administration start demanding purges of those under the guise of removing "non-citizens"

Not just a birth certificate. A birth certificate and legal name change documentation for anyone who's changed their name - like most US married women have.

Of course they have to blatantly lie about it.
