I wish we had maybe a national-referendum process, where we could get people to vote on issues like this, and align themselves with our side in an identity-cementing way.

You’re probably right — a recent Sarah Longwell podcast showed conservative Catholics weirdly focusing on immigration as the issue they were sticking with conservatives on, even when they were breaking with them on abortion, of all things.

A lot of factors to consider here, including that this isn’t a live service game, but I think the constant doomerism from media that doesn’t even ask developers their metric of success is not particularly useful.
