Our community has grown so much and I hope we can continue to deliver interesting sessions. I’m always amazed at the variety of people, professions and interests from students and mentors at Balakun.
What kind of topics do you think could be explored in this format?
And a way for people present to share their expertise and experiences and talk about things that the find interesting
This session was on How Music affects health, presented by a mentor who is a musician and composer. It was very interesting and lead to a great discussion.
Being flexible is really important when students can’t be sure about their schedules. Especially for active military. So I hope these recordings can be something people enjoy at a time that suits them.
It was really awesome to facilitate our first webinar at @balakunua.bsky.social today. I’m grateful to our mentor who was willing to go first and persevered through some technical issues. I’m really looking forward to making more of these to share within the community.

A monument to Taras Shevchenko has been installed in Botswana, the first in Africa.
“During the ceremony, the dean of the Faculty of Humanities read his own translation of ‘Testament’ into Botswana’s national language — Setswana,” Sybiha wrote.

500 Ukrainian POWs came back home in just two days. 500 families can breathe again.
In Maidan Square there are hundreds of little flags. When I saw them in January, peaking out from the fresh snow. I understood that nothing we do will ever be enough. Nothing and no one can restore what has been taken away.
But I hope we have the strength to try.
“I hope being on a train doesn’t make you a moving target.”
“I hope you never have to choose between remaining in your home or starting again somewhere no one understands your language.”
“I hope this never happens to you.”
“I hope you never lose 4 years you could have spent raising your children”
“I hope you never scroll through a digital graveyard of last messages.”
“I hope you never have to wait for the death lottery at 2:00am when an alert starts”
My friends are brilliant and I love them - but they are not extraordinary humans. If we were in the same position would we be strong, brave, resilient?
Maybe. But I wonder if I would have the patience to speak to people unaffected by war. Would I have the grace to think:
Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine is now in its 5th year. My friends in Ukraine are Exhausted; but still defiant. Most of the time.
To be honest I have mixed feelings when people talk about the strength, bravery and resilience of Ukrainians.

Every year we send out a survey to both #mentors and #mentees, not only to see how we are doing not to see how we can improve
