US tech firms successfully lobbied EU to keep datacentre emissions secret Legally questionable confidentiality clause adopted almost word for word from demands of Microsoft and trade groups

This is utterly appalling AND....there's a reason they want to keep this stuff hidden, and it's not (just) competition.

They want to keep it from you and me, because we'll question whether it's worth it, and the answer isn't one that will improve their stock prices.

🚨BREAKING

Research with @algorithmwatch.org shows how the EU Commission has copy-pasted a Microsoft amendment that will keep information on data centres hidden.

The aim? In the face of growing resistance, to prevent NGOs from obtaining key information.

I got a confession to make.

Despite the relief at Orbán’s defeat, I remain deeply cautious about what this vote actually means.

A thread. 🧵

The result is huge. Vast in its consequences. Orban was the inspiration to all those who came after him. He served as Putin's puppet, undermining Europe from within and Ukraine from without. He funded a vast network of fascists around the world. It's all vulnerable now, or falling apart entirely.

Orbán controlled 80% of the Hungarian media and still lost.

That’s one hell of a beating

Europeans want more renewables, even if it increases energy bills Public enthusiasm for clean energy comes as the Iran war exposes Europe’s vulnerability to global oil and gas markets.

Europeans want more renewables, even if it increases energy bills

Every sensible government will spend the coming months accelerating the deployment of solar, batteries, heat pumps, and EVs, especially for lower income households. It’ll be a hell of a lot cheaper in the long run than subsidising fossil fuels the next time prices spike, which they will.

EU fiscal models degrade strong case for clean energy Every euro spent by national governments is treated by commission as generating just €0.60 of economic activity no matter where it goes. Grid investment, education, tax cuts for the wealthy: all are l...

The best thing EU governments can do is invest as much as possible in clean energy, and bite the bullet on high upfront costs despite debt burdens.

But EU fiscal models used to map out nat spending plans ignores the effects of climate change and crises and degrades the strong case for clean energy.

The time between fossil fuel crises is just going to keep shrinking, until there's no discrete single "crisis" - just one unbroken prolonged state of global suffering due to fossil fuel unreliability

The best time to ditch fossil fuels was 30 years ago. The second best time is now

Europe’s EV market is BOOMING.

Electric car sales shot up by almost a third in the EU in Q1 2026.

There are 2 reasons why – and they don’t include the energy crisis (yet).

The EU Commission is now urging Europeans to work from home, drive and fly less and asking EU countries to roll out renewables.

But while our bills are increasing, fossil fuel companies are making huge profits.

Let’s also start investing some big money into solar & wind power.

Coordinating how and when devices use the most electricity can save energy and money, use more renewables, and protect the grid.

💡 This is called ‘demand-side flexibility’.

Here’s how policymakers can make it happen 👇

Data centres are one of the biggest causes of rising electricity demand – and #AI is driving their rapid growth 🤖

This is risking important climate goals.

❌ AI must not be allowed to cannibalise all (renewable) electricity production, keeping us dependent on fossil fuels.

Europe spent years debating whether the energy transition was affordable.

Spain quietly answered the question: gas now sets its electricity price in only 7% of hours.

Strategic autonomy doesn’t arrive via summit communiqués. It’s built in advance — in wind farms, solar parks, and grid investment

Electricity prices in the EU are under a microscope, with one central need underpinning conversations:

📣 The cleanest solutions must also be cheapest, with no more unnecessary taxes and levies on electricity

✅ Rebalancing the gas-electricity price ratio is key ⤵️

Electrification 💚 energy efficiency

Energy efficiency must be a guiding principle of electrification – they go hand-in-hand.

It already saved €120 billion in the EU in 2023 – and there's a lot of potential for more energy savings 👇
