I disagree that Sir Walter is treated like a cranky, somewhat addled elderly man. He has surrounded himself with enablers including his equally vain eldest daughter, Lady Russell, and Mrs. Clay to feed his endless need for praise.

Holiday Traditions with Jane Austen Holiday traditions in Jane Austen’s time were quite different from our own.  Christmas trees didn’t become common place until the Victorian era. No doubt her family made the traditional Christmas pudding with family members taking turns stirring the currants, sugar, spices, suet, and egg mixture to be steamed and served as the grand finale to the holiday meal.  Balls were a vital component to add felicity to the season by bringing friends and neighbors together for music and dancing.  Jane wrote

Character Assassination by Famous Authors I was both delighted and dismayed to see the news that the late, great author, Hilary Mantel, was working on a mash-up of Jane Austen’s novels at the time of her death at age 70 in September of 2022. ...

This might make for a fun discussion about stories featuring secondary characters from Jane’s novels.

You might be interested in the blog post of my visit to Chawton where I was privileged to see some of her original letters and a dress she wore. It was amazing. I brought back the watercolor and the pen and ink bottle. It still has the price on the box.

An overlooked giant of the 18th century: Sarah Trimmer (1741-1810)! She authored over 40 works, had 12 children, spent time with the Queen, championed the poor, started Sunday Schools, and influenced Hannah More, Jane Austen, & William Godwin. We need a movie or monograph about her! #history

I’d love to hear more about your lecture. You’re a scholar and I’m a devotee who always wants to learn more. She lived a very insecure life as an adult. Too bad her wealthy brother didn’t help them out sooner.

Her life in that era made her into the artist that she was and her stories reflect the values of the time which she cleverly skewers. Such a pity she didn’t live longer so we could have enjoyed more of writings.
