The Compact seeks to remake universities in the image of the MAGA movement: obedient, culturally monolithic, inward-looking, patriarchal, and illiberal. By conditioning federal funding on compliance, it invites schools to participate in their own undoing.
The conflict b/w higher ed & the current administration is a reminder of what’s at stake for U.S. democracy.
On Oct 1st, the current administration sent a list of commitments, known as the Compact for Academic Excellence in Education, to nine schools.
