To put it bluntly, community advocacy is the only thing standing between Big Tech and your child. Students, educators, caregivers and advocates devoting countless hours rummaging through contracts, board minutes, and legislative records to hold the powerful accountable for AI abuses against kids

Atlanta Democrats need to understand that Progress and Service is happening in spite of them, not because of them.
The city's underclass is reaching its breaking point. Holding a coronation for the next Democratic nominee here would be an FAFO moment for the machine elites that enabled Trumpism
It fundamentally *DOES NOT MATTER* how much safer autonomous vehicles are than human drivers in theory, having a corporation at the wheel is unsafe at any speed.
We don't usually have hear about the run up to any other experimental product every day of our lives for years. If there were going to be flying cars in 15 years that would be a pretty interesting article to read like once. "Damn that's crazy" etc. They wouldn't have an article every single day counting it down though. And perhaps most importantly the flying car inventor wouldn't try to sell it by saying "Here's the flying car. Fuck you you're poor now lol." Listen I'm sure there are some newish computer programs that make certain jobs easier now. That's fine but it's none of my business! Why does the general public need to be made aware of it constantly? Because "A.I." is fake and a con and a scheme to enrich liars and they are trying to push it through despite most people's very natural skepticism. This is all a media story mostly. No one left in the desiccated corporate media wants to write about some new lines of code that helps some nerds be more efficient at some niche science task. So they enthusiastically let themselves be conned by the hucksters so they can feel like they're writing a more important story than the press release they are actually writing. "This rich guys says he's changing the world and here I am talking to him about it. Hmmm come to think of it I'm changing the world too."

I mean, to enslave and plunder them
“\Winter Storm Uri is still fresh on all of our constituents’ minds—and our minds—and people naturally have a fear that this could trigger another disaster as we had in Winter Storm Uri if we have too much demand.”
An outstanding, comprehensive rebuke of AI mania in K-12 by @winterjessica.bsky.social that rounds out by highlighting the growing coalition of parents, educators, and other concerned humans that is working fast and hard to tamp it down.
really good analysis on the site today from @madisyn-writes.bsky.social. i love this game and loved their take on it, which makes a lot of points i had never considered before
Promotional graphic for an In These Times article titled “Fortress Yellowstone.” The background shows an industrial waterfront at sunset, with conveyor structures, large warehouse-like buildings, marshy ground and water in the foreground, and a blue railing along the left edge. Over the image, large black text on white blocks reads: “Fortress Yellowstone.” Smaller text below says: “The ultra-rich are fortifying themselves inside one of America’s last intact ecosystems—with money laundered from ecological sacrifice zones around the world.” The byline reads “By Joseph Bullington,” with the In These Times logo at the bottom.
"What connects these two landscapes — the Yellowstone ranch with the Planalto Santareno — is the fact that Cargill is driving the obliteration of the planalto’s mosaic of tropical forest and small farms to make way for industrial soy plantations."

Women and men who choose to be decent no longer tolerate men who are creepy, bigoted, entitled, abusive turds.
The real founders of our democracy were those who took the promises in the Declaration of Independence literally, the people who rejected the hypocrisy of its ideals and declared that its words would have meaning in their lives, too. @errinhaines.bsky.social on Elizabeth Freeman via @19thnews.org
(my actual factual opinion on AI is going to remain: you don't get to steal other people's work and then charge for it, you skeezy ass motherfuckers.
since I don't have time to deep dive every single model to see if they trained it ethically, I opt out until we've resolved this situation.)
“I was tired. It didn’t appear anything good was ever going to happen,” he said. “And then Renee Good got shot. And I don’t remember being so distinctly angry at a news story in my life. I was just so fucking angry for days. Then I turned on Alex Jones to see what he was talking about, and he had Kyle Rittenhouse on and he was saying things that weren’t true and I was like nope, that’s it. He’s just going to keep selling boner pills on the back of the worst tragedies in our country in perpetuity unless someone puts a check on this.”
May I have the strength to be as furious and as totally irrational as @bencollins.bsky.social forever
Here he is, in conversation with a colleague and friend @lindseyadler.bsky.social at @flaminghydra.com, on the topic of buying INFOWARS

Ms. McMahon said she felt like the victim of an organized cancellation campaign - the kind, she said, Mr. Kirk probably would have opposed. She defended her deleted post, noting she had used Mr. Kirk's words. "There's nothing I said that I believe was incorrect or that I feel I need to apologize for," she said.
Look, no offense Ms. McMahon and I'm sorry your talk got cancelled by an arm of the Republican Party called TPUSA, but Charlie Kirk led an organization who's entire purpose was to drive voices like yours out of the public sphere to clear unchallenged space for their own ignorant bigotry.
Remember, Charlie Kirk was a free speech champion and we'll kill you if you remind anyone what he said.
Outrageous. @chiosse.bsky.social was protecting one of his neighbors from eviction, as a result of deed theft — a plague in Central Brooklyn right now. There was no reason for NYPD officers to roughly throw him to the ground. It sure doesn’t make anyone safer. Release him now.
These men are terrible and they will chew up, spit out, and scapegoat any marginalized person in their orbit or eyeline before they will ever, EVER turn on one of their bros. Trust and Believe.
The mother and son detained in the Walmart parking lot remained at Dilley for more than three weeks. Immigration officials confiscated the boy's stuffed dinosaur toy and winter hat. At Dilley, they were provided with expired and spoiled food, which the child refused to eat. At the time they were detained, the mother was breastfeeding her youngest child, but while she was at Dilley, her milk dried up.
The physical and emotional pain our government inflicted on this mother is unbearable. We must spend the rest of our lives repairing the damage done with our tax dollars.

they are calling it the perfect summary of the "keep men out of women's sports" movement
RFK Jr: "President Trump has a different way of calculating percentages. If you have a $600 drug and you reduce it to $10, that's a 600% reduction."
“Why don’t you want to have a conversation about AI?”
“I broke into your house and stole your shit and now I just want to talk.”
“I poisoned your community but I think we should chat about how asthma is actually pretty cool.”
cover of Exhalation by Ted Chiang
Apropos of me finally picking up this book again, and discovering the most mind-bending story in it is 3/4 of the way through, this is a Ted Chiang appreciation post.
This short story collection is astonishing, a monumental work of brilliance.
New gas-powered data center projects linked to OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, and xAI could emit more greenhouse gases than entire nations, according to a @wired.com investigation from @mollytaft.com --
happy earth day, don't miss this one!
You ever try to code switch at work and fail? 😂
My favorite thing I’ve read about Elaine May is that nearly every man she worked with in her early days was semi-infuriated by her existence. A woman that funny, that hot, that smart - they hated it. Good for her.
Listen, they are building concentration camps and threatening genocide against a country of 90 million people. There is not a single remotely legal tactic that is impermissible when it comes to stopping them.
