My takeaway is similar to what Salman Khan tries to exemplify, AI use in schools needs to be heavily structured & monitored. Schools are rushing to add AI to their curriculum, but research shows most teachers struggle to use "pre-GPT" EdTech, are we sure we're not putting the cart before the horse?

An excellent talk from Derek Muller about how learning works and the possible impacts AI has on that learning. It was wonderful to see somebody be so excited about AI but also critical of it, understanding that AI has a huge potential to weaken learning if used incorrectly.
I was recently asked what my teaching values are, and like many others I responded: "to make a difference"
"Yeah, but what difference?"
When my students leave my class, I want them to be better problem solvers, not just in computing, but in all aspects of life

we got a free desk today, and we're using it as a base to set up a very cheap family desktop, because I believe it is somehow helpful for children to have a The Computer, so they can argue about whose turn it is to use The Computer

It's definitely something that needs work, but I think new teachers should put up those walls and set boundaries early on. I've seen far too many new teachers over share and then have students walk all over them. Once they've found their groove, they'll know how much to give and take, no PD needed.
Seeing my students come to that conclusion too is awesome
"Wait, the Computer Science teacher runs the Crochet club? Why???"
Three months of crochet club later: "Ohhhh, I get it now"
One thing I love about being a #CompSci teacher and the #Crochet teacher is noticing how much the two have in common. Pattern recognition, algorithm design and error checking all wrapped up a ball of yarn.
Working through some PD and found it quite refreshing to see the use of the internet spoken about in a positive light. The internet has the power to inspire creativity and foster communication. It shouldn't be locked away because it is harmful. Educate, not confiscate.

These are some great ideas. In our session with these rules it didn't show up as often as expected. Even with a party of 6. I'm the kind of DM who is excited for the player characters, so I don't mind if every so often a miss turns to a crit, or the damage is a little higher on an attack.
To use this effect, you must dictate how you affected the attack. Did the glint from your bracers throw them off, or did you stand on their toe at just the right moment? This keeps players engaged and listening to get bonuses, as well as inspiring them to add flavor to combat.

Also works on enemy saving throws, if they roll your number, you can either decrease the save by 1d4 or increase the damage.
Took a leaf out of my #teaching playbook to make my #DnD combat more fun. Each player chooses a unique number between 2 & 19. Whenever another player rolls that number on an attack, you can either add your own D20 to the attack roll or add your damage modifier to the damage.

Screenshot of Blue sky chat settings. Did you know the default is set to only allow direct messages from users I know? Now you do
Ohhh. Today's bluesky lesson, the default chat settings are to only accept chats from Users I follow (rather than everyone!). I love that this is the default... but had wondered why my DM's were so quiet. Now I know.
This might be helpful for other #coaches or #lifecoaches out in the sky!

Feel like I'm going to be working on this one for a while, but I bet it should be a pretty sweet bag when it's finished

Can I get an add to this?
MagicSchoolAI really helped with the overhead of thinking up AI prompts. I ran a workshop and set teachers in groups based on grade ranges. Got them to find and share which tools they find interesting or useful. Got teachers thinking about how they could use it for their students too
Can I get an add? EdTech and AI are my calling
Me: "So as you can see comments are not for the computer to read they're just for..."
Student: "Style points!"
Me: "Yes, comments are for style points"
I've never had a class so engaged in writing code comments before.

I am learning that relying on "research-based practices" is not enough. We need to use research to help us understand local evidence of impact.
Looking closely at what is working in OUR context with OUR students and is backed by research is the true north โจ for students.

Irish CompSci teacher and lifelong learner here. Do I fit the bill?
It's so important that we're teaching computational thinking skills alongside LLM use. Decomposition and abstraction are vitally important in any field, not just #CompSci
cacm.acm.org/news/the-imp...
#edusky #compsci #teaching
Right here! I assume CompSci teachers would be either the first or last people to sign up. They're either excited about tech (guilty) or understand too well the dangers of social media
I think including it is going to be a necessity, and I'm the first to bat for doing so, but slow and steady is the solution here.
Reinforcing critical and computational thinking skills should be the first priority, AI will come naturally to anybody with those skills
Tweet: I just told my wife "I'm sorry we have to raise children in these dystopian times". She recalled a quote she read just today: "Never feel sorry for raising dragon slayers in a time where there are actual dragons".
"Never feel sorry for raising dragon slayers in a time where there are actual dragons".
Good words to live by.
