If anyone has tips on:
1. Living with older parents you have moved in with you;
2. Living with a person with dementia;

I am all ears.

Today marks 11 years since the death of Freddie Gray. Last year, we documented the ways everyday people in Baltimore came together to create change.

Federal judge unloads on ‘unserious’ RFK Jr., says anti-trans policy showed his ‘cruelty’ Judge Mustafa T. Kasubhai vacated the “Kennedy Declaration,” finding it unlawfully attempted to override medical standards and restrict care for transgender youth.

Breaking: HHS’s ban on gender-affirming care is struck down. Rarely have I read a ruling this sharply worded.

“This case is one of a long list of examples of how a leader’s wanton disregard for the rule of law causes very real harm to very real people.”

Most striking to me about these memos is the radically different assessment of the harm imposed by the president not being able to pursue his initiatives. Over the last 15 mos., that harm has in numerous cases been treated as almost per se serious and irreparable. Here, it gets no analysis at all.

The Inside Story of Five Days That Remade the Supreme Court

it is, among other things, incredibly striking to see that roberts was so solicitous of the burden the clean power plan might put on fossil fuel executives, when, a decade later, he is indifferent to the way trump’s moves have thrown hundreds of thousands of lives into turmoil.

'I'm endeavoring to improve': Graham Platner apologizes for using slur in interview The candidate for U.S. Senate in Maine was quoted using a slur against people with intellectual disabilities.

Platner apologized for using the r-word in a recent interview. I was the first journalist to criticize this usage in my article, so I do take some credit to bringing attention to the problem. www.wmtw.com/article/grah...

US budgets less for improving lives, more for ending them. Discretionary spending by function, constant 2026 dollars. This chart shows war spending increasing steadily since 2017 and shows public investment spending peaking in 2020 before steadily falling ever since. Trump’s 2027 budget includes $1.5 trillion in war spending and only $432.3 billion in public investment. Amounts reflect discretionary funding plus supplemental discretionary funding via reconciliation. Budget function 050 in war category; others minus 700, 750 in public investment. Data: Office of Management and Budget, Congressional Research Service.

FYSA, the lead story is not "current GenXers brains are bad because lead", it's that lead poisoning disproportionately impacted poor and minority communities and those voters died younger.

Also AIDS killed a lot of young progressive GenXers.

When you add it all up, the collapse in immigration looks like this: a decline of roughly 50K for illegal (even including the people arrested and not released) and a decline of about 132K for legal. Over 70% of the cut in immigration has come from LEGAL immigration.

Illiberalism Is Not Inevitable If Viktor Orbán can lose, then his Russian and American admirers can lose too.

How did Magyar win? A long running grassroots campaign in rural and small town Hungary; a refusal to be distracted by government propaganda; a focus on economic issues and corruption; a central promise to bring back democracy and the rule of law

Orban's inability to prevent last year's Pride protests—attended by 300k despite being banned—was a turning point in his authoritarian grip of the country.

Queer people are always leading the fight against authoritarianism, as we are often its first targets. Never cower to fear.

Even if Victor Orbán is ousted on Sunday, Hungary’s return to liberal democracy is not guaranteed | Gabriela Greilinger and Cas Mudde Challenger Péter Magyar is no progressive – and after 16 years of creeping authoritarianism, the PM has embedded Fidesz in the Hungarian state, say Gabriela Greilinger and Cas Mudde of the University ...

BIG day today in Hungary, but at least in the short run, the choice is between authoritarianism and democracy, with liberal democracy at the backburner.

You could bet (literally!!) that greedy U.S. kleptocrats couldn’t get Iran deal | Will Bunch Drunk from war profits on everything from crypto to drones, Trump’s team of kleptocrats has no idea how to end their failed Iran War.

Were Vance and his outgunned Iran-deal negotiators working for you and for peace, or for the next Polymarket trades, crypto deals, drone contracts or their stock portfolios

I went deep on the kleptocrats getting rich off the war, and now prolonging it

To scholars of democratic backsliding, it is difficult to overstate how big a deal today's election in Hungary, a country of less than 10 million people, is likely to be as a narrative milestone for our age, regardless of which way it goes.

Interest in EVs surges in Europe as fuel prices jump after Iran war Demand at online marketplaces could settle at a new, higher normal, with the crisis leaving consumers ‘scarred’

The Strait of Hormuz crisis is doing something a decade of subsidies and mandates struggled to achieve:

making millions of people want an EV who previously discounted them.

I've studied so many concentration camps through history that held vulnerable people in just this kind of crowded squalor. You demonize people, you demand more arrests, this is what you get. It already has its own budget and its own momentum, and is on track to go much further, unless we stop it.

The Americans Who Saw All This Coming—but Were Ignored and Maligned Call them the Cassandras: the people—mostly not white and male—who smelled the fascism all over Trump from jump street. Why were they “alarmists,” and how did “anti-alarmism” become cool?

those who predicted authoritarianism were both dismissed, & deeply misunderstood, by the media

Photo of a very short Arendt text:

WAR CRIMES AND THE AMERICAN CONSCIENCE
I know that the war in Vietnam is not the first and will not be the last undeclared war. But I think it is possible to overlook an important point: When a nation declares war, it implies that it is prepared to play the game according to the rules. Since the beginning of this century there have been attempts to lay down certain laws for war. By not declaring war, a nation manages to evade even these feeble limitations.

I often find Arendt’s more pithy observations more relevant than her more well-known works.

Every single one of the astronauts who went to the moon and back on Artemis II was educated at a public school.

Thinking of the teachers who poured into Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen tonight. You helped send a kid to the moon!

We elected an administration on the messaging that all of society’s ills were a result of DEI & immigration. So we’re left with no choice when we look at all this immediate & staggering abject failure, death & unnecessary suffering around you but to understand that it is a direct result of whiteness
