Trapped between #IranMassacre and #IranWar, and facing #DigitalBlackoutIran, one question remains: How do we know what is true?
On BBC Persian Click, we discussed the psychology of #misinformation, cognitive and emotional biases, and AI-generated content.
In Farsi (auto-translation should work).

There was peace in Iran and the region before the attack??

Can you imagine being without internet for 14 days? A forced #digitalblackout on 90 million people in #Iran. Thousands have been killed; the rest are held hostage in silence. No calls,no news,no messages to loved ones,no way to check if your loved ones are safe. How is this possible in this century?

Jake Varrone (@jakevarrone) Just spent two hours crafting a thought, only to realize I didn’t agree with it anymore. This is one of many reasons the act of writing is so important, and should never be outsourced. Thinking hone...

Yet LLMs can still help in later stages of writing. It’s time we talk about responsible and fair use of LLMs rather than bashing them altogether. They can be helpful and we still can dive into the writing mode. It just needs more discussion on how.

Yes but these easy parts are important too. LLMs are just a tool. Why do some people assume we should stop thinking altogether using a tool? Like any other technology, it’s up to us how we use it.

HEY! YOU! ggdibbler 0.6.1 is finally up on CRAN!

harriet-mason.github.io/ggdibbler/in...

You can now pass random variables to any aesthetic in any ggplot geom/stat. If you can express it as a distribution, ggdibbler can plot it. It also works with ggplot extensions, like gganimate. #rstats

Still smiling after my Mind the Brain talk!🧠
I spoke about memory control processes and how #misinformation can slip through the mental guard. I had some fascinating conversations afterwards.
Huge thanks to everyone who joined, and to the fantastic ICN team

Science feels so irrelevant and when there is war going on in your homeland. I’ll be off Bluesky for a while.

There’s a really great lineup of speakers, and I’ll be doing a little talk on misinformation and how our memory works. It’s open to everyone. Would love to see some familiar faces there.

Had an amazing time at the Combating Misinformation conference at @unituebingen.bsky.social!
Shared how memory control processes can lead to false memories and make us vulnerable to #misinformation.
So many brilliant people, ideas, and conversations!

Why free will is required for true artificial intelligence Artificial general intelligence will not arise in systems that only passively receive data. They need to be able to act back on the world.

A #PhDlife often makes it hard to see the progress you’ve made! Sometimes, we need to pause and celebrate the little milestones! On the same day, I passed my PhD upgrade, completed a 4-year therapy journey, and marked my 80th yoga session. Maybe Jung was right about coincidences!

Had a great chat on BBC Persian Click about why #misinformation spreads so quickly and how our biases make us vulnerable to it. While big solutions involve many players, what we can do now may include question what we read, be active truth-seekers, and fact-check before sharing.
