Yeahโ€ฆ this is a tough thing for sure and if I was in the same boots I wouldnโ€™t know what the best path would be. In order to move pipelines would be requiring deleting all existing uploaded contentโ€ฆ unless I they convince Unity themselves to do some sort of monumental engineering efforts.

Oh yeah! I still think bases and accessories can be better optimized (accessories from my experience tend to be especially egregious here, I found a set of glowsticks that was 50k itself!!!) but I do also agree vrc itself should allow us to use that avatar accessory system as an optimization measure

This so much, I've seen so many avatar bases with "easy wins" to net you like 3-4k less tris with like, no impact to it visually at all ;w;

This is fair! I think the bigger issue is there's generally a lack of knowledge sharing / tooling / guides on the subject in the community because optimization is really just an optional nice to have, it lacked true incentive. With further updates that seems to finally be changing though.

Another point of comparison: Valve's deadlock, which admittedly is still in active development, the hero models are a bit more closer to 70k triangles. But, the design for that game means you're realistically not going to have more than 12 hero models in the scene at once.

For VRC that's like 80.

Given that VRChat's rendering setup also doesn't really support proper instancing, a lot of shader processing can't be parallelized too, so compared to most AAA games there's going to be a LOT more drawcalls, and it takes a lot longer for multiple drawcalls to draw the same amount of triangles...

There's a lot of talk around VRChat's perf ranking for avatars this week... people generally think the 70k triangle limit for avatars on PC is too low.

A base body mesh in Cyberpunk 2077 is like only 8k triangles... Surely there's a lot of breathing room for people to design more optimal avatars ๐Ÿ˜…

Without tools like vrcfury unused blendshapes do impact performance because they lead to additional deform passes and drawcalls. Vrcfury will automatically bake unused blendshapes but honestly this should be taken care of by the VRChat SDK in the future IMO

The issue with polycount is it has exponential impact based on other properties, like blendshapes, and also can vary a lot by shader, since they run per-vertex. As a result triangle count either matters a bit or a LOT.

I would love to see the rank system expanded to key off of these, personally.

It's really cool that the gameplay loop seems really well informed -- the idea that several systems actually keep you rotating between islands (bounties, etc) is really good for a vrc world because it means you'll eventually always meet up with everyone again. Def had thought put into it.

I know some people are a little tired of the new VRChat fishing world being all encompassing right now but it's really cool to see a world with a lot of game design effort put into it. It's for sure setting the bar higher for game worlds in VRC and I'm excited for the future!

The amount of people that came up to me at FC and were like "wow Cyber you lost weight! :D" was so fucking rewarding -- I still struggle to see it in myself but now I see it in the pics and others are noticing, it's very inspiring. I still have ways to go but it's very encouraging now!
