THE SPARROW is a really, really excellent sci-fi book. A fantastic exploration of first contact with the Other as well as faith in a dark and broken world. (Warning: It's dark. But it is SO worth the read if that's not a dealbreaker for you.)
I don't think I'd leave it off. It shows you can work as part of a big team and deliver on work reliably, which would be useful skills for most of that sort of thing. Gov jobs are very "you have to check every box" but as long as you also check every box, I'd include other stuff too
Picture of a sunset in the western sky with hills & mountains in the foreground. There are 2 lonely power poles in the lower center, seeming to frame the crescent moon, Venus, and multiple stars in the darkening skies in the rest of the photo.
From my home to yours -
Have a good evening & a week that is kind to you.
Today was one of those special days where a local tells you about a secret spot and the next day you hike back to a giant brick ruin in the shape of an Uncharted level and you climb/hop/scramble all over it holding a nikon n80 w/zoom lens and late that night your body is 44 and was the entire time
The Sparrow isn't really a thriller, though it is very tense. Hard to really compare the two!
(these are not a tonal match, I am warning you up front. But The Sparrow grappled a lot with language and behavior in a way I kind of wanted PHM to take a little more seriously)
project hail mary (movie version) was very enjoyable. If you liked the idea but are interested in another serious take on that type of first contact story, you may enjoy Mary Doria Russell's "The Sparrow" (book)

A man with a mullet and a mustache glowers, saying "you best get goin'" He is wearing a trucker hat that says "keep honking, I'm building a gun big enough to pierce the heavens and knock God from His throne. If He made us in His image, then He must be a fragile and scared thing, and I aim to do Him the kindness He will not do me."
Keep Honking
Comic. I’m at my desk, leaning over to the doorway, saying “Hey! Foghorn! Foghorn Leghorn! Get in here!” Foghorn Leghorn is walking past the doorway, “Boy, I tell ya, I tell ya, not so loud, boy. What, I say, I say, what d’ya want?” Next panel, I’m gesturing to my computer. “How do I find that really good manga you recommended? It’s an anime now? I keep getting Halloween costumes.” Foghorn leans over my chair, “well, boy, I say, I say, you ain’t typin the entire title.” Last panel, I turn around- “you said ‘witch hat.’ Foghorn gets in my face- “open your ears, boy!! ‘Witch Hat Atelier, I tell ya! I tell ya ‘Atelier,’ I tell ya’”
