“They sprayed so much chemicals, the damn grass don’t even grow here anymore—you can quote me,” Gunther said. “I knew it back in 1990. I said, ‘They’re sprayin’ so much chemicals it’s gonna be the end.’ And it’s the end.”

He's a liar and a killer. I don't know what else to tell people, he's a rich eugenicist, he wants as many poor people as possible to die in the name of 'health.' He's a genuinely and uniquely malign figure in American life and his appointment was an act of violence

The midterm gerrymandering war and the Iran war alike show Trump's inability to imagine that the people he's picking fights with have any agency, any ability to respond.

He loves his "you don't have the cards" metaphor but he's amazingly terrible at actually thinking about whether they do.

Yep. Their position is *explicitly* that they can do it and Dems can't -- that's what Trumpism is

NC requires public school teachers to hold a license.

Durham, NC's Mt. Zion Christian Academy receives public $ for vouchers. They require their teachers to demonstrate their relationship w/the Holy Spirit by speaking in tongues.

A license is optional. #nced

The leaders of North Carolina's state legislature have failed to pass a budget for nearly a year now, making ours the only state in the entire nation operating today without a budget.

The Republican leaders of our State House and State Senate remain far apart on their respective proposals, however.

Opinion | Trump Corrupts, and Absolute Trump Corrupts Absolutely

“To say that President Trump is corrupt is to somehow understate the size, scope and magnitude of his corruption.

It is as if you were to describe a modern thermonuclear device as a ‘bomb.’ That is true enough, but it is not quite the truth. It does not capture the nature of the thing in full.”

Hi, it's me. A guy with a chronic illness who is apparently muddying up our risk pool. It's really uplifting to know that according to my government, my death would be a net benefit for others by lowering their costs.

Republicans control the NC General Assembly and NC is the only state without a budget.

Instead of funding public schools, they sent $533M to private school vouchers. 87% go to students who were never in public schools.

That’s not a failure. It’s a choice.

Here's an example of an outrageous grift from the North Carolina state legislature:

"Parents for Educational Freedom" (PEFNC) gets $1M in taxpayer dollars, recurring every year as a part of the private school voucher scam, to campaign against public schools and teachers.

The sheer complexity of the web of money, class, and mobility which defines Plano, TX means there’s dozens of reasons why this woman and her child might experience a multi-lingual day at the park.

And mass deportation will respond to exactly ZERO of them.

It’s beyond ludicrous.

Plano, TX cosplays as a city, but it *is* a temporary boarding house for the most mobile of the int’l corporate class — a waystation for households of wealthy managers on the way up/down various MULTI-NATIONAL corporate ladders.

Pitifully inane to imagine deporting the “international” out of Plano.

tired: its the Department of Defense (est. 1947)

hired: its the War Department (1789-1947)

wired: we're bringing back rum rations, handsaw amputations, trench foot, latrines made of pure cholera, and other manly things of that nature

Ummm Jacobin, so when some of us go on and on about how “cringe is good”, this is NOT what we’re talkin’ about.

Just fyi…

One of the least insightful things to say about any human source is that it is “biased,” without asking exactly how or with what implications for our interpretation or use of it. Ask, and you won’t eat horse paste just because profs vote D.

People should get this stuff out of the way in high school

So, there’s surely a more complex argument to be made here and I might not have put it the same way…

…but this explanation does seem, broadly speaking, both plausible and effective.

Academia should have more and better jobs, of course, but insofar as it currently doesn’t, nobody should be beating themselves up. Moreover, the outside is actually pretty nice for most people, and there are many places to use what you learned to do.

1 day ago 158 14 3 1

And as we build new institutions in the coming years, as we must, we can prioritize blurring the distinction that academia built up like a plaque between learning and the world. And then you won’t be outside at all.

Do I miss the classroom/teaching? Often.

Do I regret doing it? Not for a second.

Those years spent reading books and then arguing about them with very smart, committed thinkers remain among the most satisfying experiences of my life.

YMMV, but I’d do it all over in a heartbeat.
