Great talk yesterday by @hilgerslab.bsky.social on RNA complexity in the nervous system @cgen2025.bsky.social @ucph.bsky.social mRNA isoform regulation occurs at multiple levels, with crosstalk between start and end of mRNA transcripts and serves a critical role to safeguard neuronal gene expression

New paper from our lab! Fabulous and brilliant @carlosalfonsog.bsky.social and @shimengjin.bsky.social, together with fantastic co-authors, show that the neuronal protein ELAV promotes biogenesis of circular RNAs in the brain. This happens through inhibition of forward ("classical") splicing.

Celebrating an accepted paper is fun for many reasons! A while ago we had a little get-together for Anton's @antonhess.bsky.social and Dominika's (first authors) paper published in @emboreports.org. Featuring, the larval-brain-shaped (3rd instar) cake baked by lab star chef and co-author Hasan.

So excited to host my friend and former labmate @laghalab.bsky.social as a ... (drumroll) Special Guest at our institute! Mark your calendars and expect a great talk with beautiful live imaging.

Seminar announcement for a Max Planck Special Guest Seminar featuring Mounia Lagha from IGMM, France. The talk, titled 'Lighting Up the Central Dogma to Dissect How Sharp Developmental Patterns Are Established,' is scheduled for March 20, 2024, at 1:00 PM at MPI-IE, Lecture Hall in Freiburg.

The Lagha lab investigates the mechanisms governing gene expression during development, focusing on the interplay between transcription and translation. They pioneered methods to study the translation of single mRNA molecules in Drosophila embryos, revealing critical heterogeneity in translation. This work has led to the discovery of translation factories and intragenic translation heterogeneity, uncovering a novel layer of variation in gene expression.
To achieve a comprehensive understanding of gene expression precision, the Lagha Lab integrates transcriptional and translational regulation. They employ advanced quantitative imaging techniques to simultaneously monitor mRNA and protein dynamics in living Drosophila embryos with high spatio-temporal resolution. These observations are combined with theoretical models to formulate predictions, which are then tested through genetic and optogenetic manipulations. The lab's research aims to bridge the gap between transcription and translation, providing an integrated, multiscale view of gene expression control.

We are excited. Mounia Lagha will be our 1st Special Guest in 2025.🤗

📆 March 20, 1pm

The Lagha lab (@igmm-montpel.bsky.social) uses live imaging to study mechanisms of transcription & translation in living embryos. Join us for an enlightening talk next Thursday.
