I had a professor in grad school who had specialized in Soviet politics as a grad student in the 80s. He regularly complained about how his professors had assured him that becoming a Soviet expert was the safest bet in the world.

This certainly describes some people in the admin. Vance pretends to be dumber than he is to please the MAGA crowd. Kennedy was brought in to destroy HHS. The admin wasn't trying to lose a war to Iran, however. The stuff Hegseth says and does tangibly hurt Trump and it's driven by ignorance.
Exactly one year ago today:
We don't serve contemporary California cuisine in your lungs
Holding a minimum of one command position at every prior rank ensures progressive leadership experience
Steady progression through the ranks. Unless you said nice things about Trump on Fox News weekend shows. Then you get to jump from army middle management to running the show.
A minimum of a master's degree in civilian education broadens perspectives beyond military tactics.
We want our officers to get advanced degrees. Just not at any of those woke schools that actually teach stuff.
We firing Hegseth then?
Naming the policeman Officer X, Welles addressed him directly. "Wash your hands, Officer X. Wash them well. Scrub and scour, you won't blot out the blood of a blinded war veteran," Welles said. "Go on, suckle your anonymous moment while it lasts. You're going to be uncovered. We will blast out your name! We'll give the world your given name, Officer X. Yes, and your so-called Christian name. It's going to rise out of the filthy deep like the dead thing it is."
When Tom Homan, Trump and other Republicans defend the masking of ICE agents, I can't help but think of Orson Welles announcing on his radio show his intention of identifying the South Carolina police officer who violently attacked and blinded the uniformed Black veteran Isaac Woodard in 1946.
"Ahhhh, he got me again!"
And that problem's downstream from letting college become insanely expensive. Can't justify a life of debt if the degree doesn't deliver a better job.
Oh fiddlesticks
One of the best things I’ve read in a while:
Trump's people just reenacting the Comfortably Numb scene from The Wall. Shooting him up with stimulants and sending him out to give a racist rant.
Earlier this morning, President Trump threatened me and a group of service and veteran Members of Congress with arrest, trial, and death by hanging.
Here’s my response:
Great piece and very heartening. Speaking as someone who desperately wants UBI to work and only worries about all the landlords raising rents in response. Maybe I'm not optimistic enough.
Great recent article on the variables involved by @scottsantens.com

🧵 Yesterday I shared my views on how disordered discourse has captured the US state and the risk of that happening elsewhere, but I don’t want to leave you hanging without proposing a solution.
What we’re witnessing in America is what happens when disordered discourse captures a political party, then the state itself. The Republican Party was the first to fall - abandoning truth for conspiracy, ideology for grievance, and policy for performative outrage.
Re-upping this piece once more because it was a long time in the making. But also because after he was wrongly accused by media outlets, law firms, and politicians, Silverman deserves to have as many people read about his vindication as possible.
Protest is good for you and good for the nation. Get out there

Senate is back in session today.
1/ So a quick 🧵on where things are at on the shutdown.
You get a lot of propaganda and spin thrown at you, so I want to give you the real, behind-the-scenes tea.
Remarkable, and fortunate, that these morons fail to understand the the strategy of fascists as they embrace the ideology. No attempt to actually capture society and infiltrate non-state institutions.
Certain we already live in a fascist state and the gestapo are coming any day now but also has a lawyer on standby because surely the law will protect him when they come.
