If this crazy period breaks up, maybe we can.

John Foster Dulles would be so ashamed!

I wish I had appreciated how exceptional the period right after the Cold War ended was when it was happening. Things have been so dark recently.

So much this! I can barely relate to my earlier self who was so optimistic about the future in 1989!

Maybe they can still somehow arrest Netanyahu, but Israel is not a member of the ICC.

It will be interesting to see how many American news orgs feature this story prominently.

Would coverage be different if it was an Iranian soldier (presumed Muslim)?

I don't think I'll ever get over Clarence Thomas ruling on cases related to Jan 6 knowing that his wife was an active participant in the attempted coup.

Or ruling on cases related to government regulations and a wealth tax knowing he took gifts from billionaires.

It's a disgrace.

Gonna spend the next two years spamming every elected Dem about the concept of "damnatio memoriae." Chisel his name off every inscription. Build over the various Trump Towers like they're Nero's Golden House. Remove him from physical memory, not to forget but as a sign of disrespect to the man.

I now often have students who come to class and take no notes at all. That never used to happen, and seeing it feels very strange.

this morning, mamdani’s team got in touch with me to float a new tax proposal: if your net worth exceeds $5 million and you dress badly, you’ll be hit with a 10% annual levy for “visual pollution.” i would be in charge of deciding if the outfits are bad.

The Myths of McMasterism The Limits and Politics of Professional Protest

“To resign in protest is to choose the purity of public dissent over the grinding, unglamorous work of internal constraint. Johnson chose the latter. McMaster called it dereliction. It may have been the opposite.” Brilliant; wish I’d written this, @sodrock.bsky.social

So “Christians” like Hegseth are so ignorant of their own scripture that they’ll go with a fictional movie quote without even checking? Lines up with his similar grasp of how military action is supposed to advance political goals. Comprehensively stupid.

West Virginia dad dies after insurer denied his $50,000 cancer treatment 4 times — 93% of patients face the same delays The vast majority of patients who require prior authorization from their insurer face delays, which can result in permanent disability or even death.

His oncologist recommended the treatment, his insurance carrier said no.

This country is spending billions on a no-reason-for-it war, yet Americans are dying, going hungry and homeless.

This cannot stand. Call your representatives in Congress, no matter their party.

The New York Times is giving advice to Trump, suggesting he adopt a more collaborative approach to foreign policy. But this is like asking a dog to do algebra.

Post from Dale Partridge claiming nobody wants to live in diverse neighborhoods

Post from Dale Partridge claiming nobody wants to live in diverse neighborhoods

I quite happily live in a neighborhood where most people do not share my religion, where multiple languages are represented, and where people have come from a lot of different countries.

Bigoted assholes always assume everyone else actually shares their bigotries.

Trump just appointed Tiger Woods as AMB to Saudi Arabia. ‘It’ll help him sober up. He’s a good guy & deserves a 2nd chance.’

I made this up, but you weren’t sure, were you?

The thing is that Trump’s US advisers told him the Israelis were way too optimistic about their key goals but he still decided to do it anyway!

I feel sick to my stomach waiting around to see what atrocity Trump has in mind for the people of Iran this evening. It's hard to fathom our other elected leaders aren't able to check him in any meaningful way. It's an indictment not just of voters but of our whole system. We're ruled by a mad king.

How Trump Took the U.S. to War With Iran

This article sheds light on many things, including the role of the Israelis, the positions of Vance and Rubio, and the warnings Trump received. Turns out that having a stupid man in charge who is determined to trust his gut is a serious problem.

Trump's aides are telling him that destroying Iran's infrastructure is fair game.

They are wrong. They are advocating war crimes.

Unfortunately, the targeting of infrastructure is far from new. See: "The Dangerous Rise of 'Dual-Use' Objects in War": papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

On the 58th anniversary of Dr. King's assassination, it's time to reckon with the media's troubling role in the civil rights struggle. (I pitched this to @nytimes.com who found it "fascinating..[but] the news is making deeper & certainly more historical pieces very hard." But they're the news.) A 🧵

it is hard to think of a set of people less equipped to improve anything about the airport situation.
