I've ranted about LLM "AI" elsewhere, and in replies, but to reiterate it in a thread that I can pin now:

One of the fundamentals of computer science is "Garbage In, Garbage Out". I learned this as a child, learning to program, over 40 years ago.

You cannot put bad data in, and get good data out.

Had a dream in which I did a thread of the names of all of Australia’s owl species in emoji form so stuff it, I may as well do that IRL

Scientists invented a fake disease. AI told people it was real Bixonimania doesn’t exist except in a clutch of obviously bogus academic papers. So why did AI chatbots warn people about this fictional illness?

This is quite extraordinary- scientists set a kind of trap for AI chat bots by inventing a fake disease. AI told people it was real and… the deliberately bogus preprints started being cited in peer reviewed literature 🫣

I rewatch the originals every now and again and admire the fight in RotJ more each time. Movies today are unwatchably dark. Two characters in black fighting on an almost black set and you could see absolutely everything that was going on. The lighting is exquisite.

Mine was “well, Darth Maul was great. Shouldn’t have killed him.” Though my favourite was AOTC where I walked out and said, “there was a really nice door in it” (and I still think the door is brilliant - I look the scene up sometimes on YouTube just to enjoy the door again).

The AI Boom Wasn’t Built for the Polycrisis “There are too many ways for it to fail for it not to fail.”

The AI economy looks...really precarious. So @matteowong.bsky.social & I did a bunch of reporting to try to figure out what happens when a potential bubble collides with a war in Iran and a potential resource shortage. The answer is...arguably the most dire stuff i've heard from smart ppl in a while

After cloning 1,200 mice over 20 years, Japanese scientists discovered there is a limit on how many times mammals can be cloned. The 58th generation all died, showing that without sex, we mammals go into "mutational meltdown".

Honestly, at a certain point, I think you do need to justify it. No one occasion is a whole sentence. But when you are constantly letting your chosen community down, I think it’s okay for that community to ask why.

Two photos of white-footed dunnarts being held in someone’s hand from the article linked in the post. In the top photo the dunnart is biting the hand ferociously, in the second photo the dunnart is peering over the top of the person’s thumb with enormous, endearing eyes. The dunnart is about the same size and colour as a mouse, but with large bulging eyes, sharp teeth, and a pointed snout.

The caption of the first photo says “A white-footed dunnart is a carnivore, feeding mainly on insects, pictured here at Murramarang National Park on the NSW south coast. (WWF: Vivianna Miritis)”. The caption of the second photo says “The white-footed dunnart is found in several states, pictured here on the NSW South Coast. (WWF: Vivianna Miritis)”.
