Academia and punk life still neck and neck (i.e. neither has turned into a viable career but still getting lots of satisfaction from both).

On the music front, Bad Missionary recently recorded our first album (stay tuned for release maybe by end of 2026). I've also hopped on bass with Forx at least for the next few shows (I'll link them in the comments). Critical Witness is still on hiatus but there's progress on EP #2.
Facebook memory of me on stage at Mavericks with my band Bad Missionary. Caption reads: Mazel tov to our bassist/vox @sbg_arch, PhD! Sarah defended her dissertation right before hitting the stage with us and friends @sixtycyclehumottawa and Shanker and the Frontenacs.
3 YEARS A DOCTOR!
On the eve of my defense, I played a show with my band Bad Missionary continuing the unlikely to be won race: academia v music.
Postdoc now finished. A bunch of contract courses under my belt. Book proposal in development. Still keeping fingers crossed for tenure-track position.
My #JanesWalkOttawa is posted!

On the TV, a black and white photo of a family posing for a portrait in the streets of Vienna and banner that reads "Marking Holocaust Remembrance Day"
My grandma Edith with her parents and sister in Vienna, ca. 1938.
She survived as one of the hidden children of Moissac. She has spent the last 30 years sharing her story.
Never again. A call that we never fail to recognize the humanity of another.
Also Ottawa's most popular folk-punk-glockenspiel band.
Seems Dela was not alone. Humans don't achieve greatness without cats.
Ready to pounce!

Hooray bike returns!
Sadly missing solos too:( My students are putting on a hip hop showcase at FONO in collab with Side By Side Weekend for their community engagement final assignment.
Side note: Flash back to 2014 and my architecture bike ride with Brian Smith featuring Sister’s of Notre Dame campus by Tim Murray on Heron.
"Enough affordable units – and affordable enough?" Spoiler: not likely.
I should have skipped my union meeting. This looks way more fun.
Gig flier announcing a record release concert starring Suzanne Nuttall and featuring Libby & Cal, Dawn Sev, Slo’ Tom, Erin Okrainec and me. 7pm start tonight at Night Oat on Gladstone in Ottawa.
Guitar shenanigans. With bonus fiddle and autoharp. Tonight in Centretown! Folk-rock fun! #palsofrock
Boo. Calendar reminds me I have a union meeting tomorrow night :(
I cringed followed by bafflement. How?
Not going to market our way out of the problems the market has created, either.
Why not blame both? More importantly, why not look to where planning has contained the worst of the market AND vis versa? When more importantly, why not look to where those most negatively impacted have resisted both?
I'm not so sure.
He's not so much arguing less urban planning as he is arguing for more market.
Quick to point out failings of planning (which are many) without acknowledging the at least as detrimental and discriminatory effects of the market.
Same. I was pretty indifferent before yesterday's broadcast.
(It points to my evergreen concern of who 'revitalization' strategies are for and why it rarely 'a city for all' as is so often claimed.)
Last class of the term!
It's been a challenging year of contract instructing. Looking forward to recalibrating over the summer and figuring out what's next.
I loved hearing that their training included how to make not just scientific BUT explicitly human (vulnerable, emotional, instinctual) observations.
Sigh.
💯 co-sign: "We can't 'revitalize' downtown without public toilets."
In case you missed it. ☝️👇
