Just finished: If On A Winter's Night a Traveller by Italo Calvino 📚💙

Fun! I enjoyed the meditation on writing and reading that it took me on. I often struggle with Calvino quite a bit, though because I don't like the way he writes women, this was just as misogynistic as his other works.

ugh at least i spent one good full day lying in a sunny garden reading

Just Finished: The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka 📚💙

Quick and painful reread because I've been feeling very Gregor Samsa recently. This edition also included the stories In The Penal Colony which I struggled with and The Judgement which was short but hit hard.

the metamorphosis is very easy to relate to for teenagers lol...

fable reviews for classic lit are always depressing but this one is pissing me offffff. i'm sooo sick of this obsession with avoiding discomfort and the idea that a story making you anxious means that you don't have to engage with it. if these are our english teachers no wonder people don't read.

Just Finished: The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez 💙📚

I really liked this. There was a lull midway that turned it into a bit of a slog (which is why this took me 4 weeks to read lol) but the final third of the book was brilliant.

it's just irritating to constantly have to coddle cis people who want to be reassured wrt their hyperspecific emotional relationship to harry potter lol... they always want your permission to not feel guilty about not changing their behaviour

whenever folks talk about harry potter and separating artist from art they always have this indignant 'OH SO IM A BAD FOR BUYING THESE BOOKS?' but thats not the real issue. the reality is that many will BELIEVE you are bad, and that is VALID. its not your choice what others think of you

that is used as a plot device to further the cis characters' emotional arcs? so what's that all about.

it doesn't help that i'm very skeptical of the way lists of books with trans characters are constructed. they have ari and dante in their transmasculine section on thestorygraph but as far as i remember the only mention of transness in that book is the transmisogynistic hate crime

wait nevermind i just found the trans readathon spreadsheet. there has to be at LEAST one book that hits in here.

i was looking at the tra/ns rights readathon posts and i'm sure if i comb through all the categories i'll find a few good ones, but the actual infographic for transmasculinity was so dire if you don't like ya. i know i just need to really scour the depths of indie publishing for good shit but ughh
