It is not the increase from 89 to 91 that is problematic. It is this part of the motion. Throwing out the Electoral Boundaries Commission (and all of their work) and instead creating a new committee of MLAs with a new advisory panel.

Absolutely, it’s about accountability and vigilance IRL (vs just on social media).

Writing MLAs, newspapers, organizations… showing up at rallies and protests… being an open ally with / advocate for those being targeted by the government … learning about political systems … critically thinking…

The UCP are defending their move to gerrymander electoral maps in Alberta by invoking this section from page 66 of the report.

It is the recommendation of only one member and is provided “for the express purpose of dissuading the Legislature from accepting the minority report.”

Elections are about people choosing their representatives, not politicians choosing their voters. Yet that is what the UCP is planning. It is planning to deliberately disenfranchise urban voters. Red Deer and Lethbridge would not exist as autonomous political entities. Calgary/Edmonton hurt too.

There is a reason that we do not have MLAs decide on electoral boundaries. Tossing out the Electoral Boundaries Commission and replacing it with a UCP-dominated committee is not just a bad idea. It is really bad for democracy. Ask the US, ask Hungary. This is not normal!

Frankly … If your political party needs to cheat to win elections by gerrymandering boundaries, and you are OK with that, then you need to take a long hard look in the mirror and question your own ethics and values.

If you need a hill on which to die, “election integrity” is one!

This is a dangerous step away from Democracy in a blatantly open attempt to gerrymander the AB electoral map.

This move should concern every Albertan, regardless of their political preferences.
