A "Fox News Alert" entitled "Autism Announcement" with pictures of Trump and RFK JR.

I couldn't resist the opportunity to use this meme image to announce that yes, I'm officially on the spectrum. Level 1 autism - what would previously have been called Asperger's Syndrome.

(I feel the need to state that Trump's claim about paracetamol during pregnancy is mostly bullshit.)

Here's a map/thing I made a while ago showing the various mountain passes through the Boland mountains east of Cape Town.

Moment of interest as I learned that Zohran Mamdani, promising candidate for Mayor of New York, attended the same primary school as me for a couple of years. Immediately followed by moment of horror as I realised that he was several grades below me. 😱 I should not be that old!

Hey Microsoft, appreciate the effort to translate Windows into Commonwealth English, but "checked" doesn't get translated as "ticked" in *all* contexts... #i18n

Indeed. One of the design points of the Van Zyl Slabbert system is that it still gives parties seats that are proportional to the votes cast, while adding an element of local representation.

Applying the Van Zyl Slabbert electoral system in 2024 Please note that I write here in my personal capacity. The views expressed here are not those of my employer. Following last week’s post in which I imagined the results of a mixed-member proportional...

SA's Electoral Reform Panel is starting its public consultations this month, so it seems a good time to recall that we already did this once with the Electoral Task Team in 2003.

I wrote about what the 2024 election would have looked like under the ETT's system: adrian.frith.dev/van-zyl-slab...

Small area Census 2022 dissemination

After conducting a thorough quality assessment of sub-municipal census data, it has been determined that Census 2022 results will be made available at electoral ward level. In keeping with the section 17 of the Statistics Act (Act 6 of 1999), which guarantees the confidentiality of individual data, data for some wards with lower case counts will not be made available to prevent the risk of individuals being identified. Where necessary, data are intentionally suppressed to avert the direct or residual disclosure of identifiable units. It is important to highlight that this protocol has been consistently followed in previous Censuses and surveys.

The electoral ward-level data will be accessible on the electronic dissemination tools in September 2024 (SuperWeb and Nesstar).

It appears that Stats SA will only be releasing data at ward level, and not small area level. This is ... not good.

So far only the high-level municipal data has been released. I will only be able to update dotmap.adrianfrith.com and census2011.adrianfrith.com when the detailed data comes out in a later phase.

Some preliminary mapping now that Census 2022 data has started trickling out.

I don't know what's happening in Richtersveld where population supposedly doubled in 10 years. (6.8% per year = double in 10.5 years.) Maybe a data validity issue because of Census undercount.
