Games were still *just* affordable enough to make that things could be more off the wall (Portal 1&2, Spec Ops: The Line, Banjo and Kazooie Nuts and Bolts, Wet, etc). You’d have some more level-based or area-based games with cool mechanics (Arkham games, MG Rising, Vanquish) and generally “arcadey”

Yeah, I know I’m in the vast minority, but the way From chooses to tell their stories and write their characters is like kryptonite to me. But Elden Ring has become one of my all-time favorite games, so of course I’ll be seated

Never saw anyone saying it looked awful. I recall a lot of confusion the first couple times it was shown as to what type of game it is. But I think the demo is what got people on board. Game feels fantastic, the hacking mechanic is excellent, and the banter between them is great
