The long gone Bateman’s newsagent. Now a vape shop.

The long gone Bateman’s newsagent. Now a vape shop.

I mean I’m just walking past what used to be the newsagent I got up at 6.30am every Friday to get the first pick of the 30-odd weekly comics when they were delivered and from the looks of things they probably don’t sell WHOOPEE! any more.

Also it’s no longer 1979.

The point I’m trying to make here isn’t actually “bring back the glory days of comics in newsagents”because….THERE ARE NO BLOOMING NEWSAGENTS ANY MORE! The world has moved on and we need to move with it and find other methods of delivery to get comics into the hands of kids.

A paltry magazine display in a supermarket in a town with no newsagents.

A paltry magazine display in a supermarket in a town with no newsagents.

Once the 7-8 newsagents of my hometown would have been replete with shelves stuffed with 2000 AD, STARLORD, MISTY and dozens of others. Now we have three shelves in M&S and a choice of… well…DISNEY PRINCESS, PEPPA PIG and PAW PATROL. Next week’s landfill with a flimsy kids mag stuck on the back.

One of those grabber devices that allow you to pick stuff up without having to bend down.

One of those grabber devices that allow you to pick stuff up without having to bend down.

I do not have the words to describe just what a game-changer this contraption has been to a man of a certain age.

(Particularly good for getting at action figures that fall off shelves and down the back of other furniture.)

Always amazing to see our super talented @brokenfrontier.bsky.social #BF6toWatch creators going on to get the recognition they deserve. Olivia is also a guest artist at this week's IN-PERSON @goshcomics.bsky.social and @brokenfrontier.bsky.social Drink and Draw in London.

Cue: "That's all very well and good but what have you done for *me* in 2026, Andy?"

I have given you the gift of me. A precious thing indeed.

This is important! Conundrum Press are amazing and they need some help right now. They have such a vital socially conscious ethos. Check it out and support if you can. And we'll be prioritising some reviews at BF soon too.

Sajan's work is amazing. Good reason to back this!

First named announced guest is... me. But the as yet unnamed Six to Watch artists are far more interesting for attendees so we ran with that at the forefront.

Not sure I've ever been named a guest at a festival or con before though...

I'd forgotten we'd run a COMMANDO review last year at BF. #5829 of the decades-old series. No Marvel numbering antics on these shores!*

The objections to us saying we have a zero tolerance policy to generative AI and anyone using it in their comics can’t have coverage at Broken Frontier are like a digital equivalent to someone saying IRL “what do you mean I can’t come into your house and take a dump on your living room carpet?”
