After 100 years of copper mining, parts of Tasmania’s King River are "biologically dead."
As the demand for minerals for EVs and AI surges, these rivers serve as a stark warning: the cost of mining lasts centuries.
@slovgren.bsky.social reports for #Mongabay.
In July, the World Heritage Committee meets. This is a critical moment to apply pressure: no place should carry the title “World Heritage” while its original inhabitants are being evicted and abused.

Survival condemns these latest attacks on civilians in West Papua. Those responsible for the killings must be brought to justice. We also demand an end to the culture of impunity that the Indonesian Security Forces have enjoyed in West Papua for so long.
Absurd!

Yesterday Israel bombed an ambulance in Lebanon, killing paramedic Hassan Badawi
Over the last two & a half years Israel systematically targeted healthcare workers in Gaza, murdering hundreds, and the failure of the world to take action means Israel is free to do it again.
I like this because it articulates the conservative concept of freedom in a nutshell. You have the freedom to do x, except you don't, because I don't want you to. bsky.app/profile/atru...

Four years ago, UK journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian expert in Indigenous affairs Bruno Pereira went to the Javari region to find out how best to defend the Amazon. They were shot dead in a killing that had reverberations around the world.

Why we need to radically change conservation
We tend to think of alternatives only in contrast to an existing system. But the alternative to the existing nature conservation is not "no nature conservation." Of course we all want to protect nature! Survival fights to decolonize nature conservation.
But we need to radically rethink nature conservation, and the conservation industry needs to own up to the racist history and colonial ideology from which it emerged. This is what we mean by "decolonization." This also includes rethinking our responsibility for the expulsion of entire peoples.
For every nature conservation project, the Free, Prior and Informed Consent of the Indigenous or local population must be obtained. If this doesn't happen, you're not allowed to work there.
It's time to #DecolonizeConservation.

In Daraya, Khadija Hadla lost ten of her family in the war. Seven of them—four brothers and three nephews—were abducted by the regime and remain missing.
The Assad regime forcibly disappeared upwards of 160,000 Syrians. Almost all are assumed dead.

Population matters for all species. Yes - including humans.
If you think it doesn't, because humans are magical and special, you're simply wrong. Or you might be a fucking idiot.
"We can't talk about human overpopulation!"
Yes we can. And we should.
New Tanzanian reports pave the way for more Maasai evictions – and UNESCO is complicit
After growing international citicism and powerful Maasai protests, Tanzania’s government created two “Presidential Commissions” in 2024.
They were meant to investigate land conflicts and examine the evictions of Maasai from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
But they recommend that evictions from conservation areas should continue – citing UNESCO and the racist idea that population growth is a threat to nature.
UNESCO’s hypocrisy is costing the Maasai their land. ⚠️
Two new Tanzanian government reports are being used to justify ramping up the evictions of Maasai from areas they’ve protected for generations.
