Lights Out Alert for April 18! 4.4 million birds will be flying over Oregon skies tomorrow night (and another 4 million the following night). Please turn lights out for migrating birds so they can see the stars they use to navigate to their breeding grounds.

A group of people putting plants in the ground on a sunny day.
Last Saturday 100+ people came out to our first public planting at our new 12.5 acres property on NE 82nd Ave! Together, we put 540 native plants in the ground, one of the first steps towards healing and restoring this former landfill to make it a haven for people and wildlife.
We're transforming a 12.5-acre brownfield into a Wildlife Care Center, nature park, & oak savanna habitat. Join us on 4/15 at 7p to learn about early design and restoration efforts, native plantings, and the horticulture program for local high school students. birdallianceoregon.org/event/nature...

The Northern Rough-winged Swallow may look unassuming with its brown back and dusky throat but it has a hidden feature: tiny hook-like barbs on its wing feathers that feel rough to the touch. Even its scientific name, Stelgidopteryx serripennis, means “scraper wing” and “saw feather.”

Have you ever wondered how young Clark's Grebe "grebettes" hitch a ride? Both parents share the job of back-brooding, keeping them warm and protected from predators. While one parent is busy ferrying their young, the other is foraging for food and they switch back-n-forth all day. 🎥: Lane Wintermute

What makes Short-eared Owls so charismatic is that we actually get to see them in action! While most owls in Oregon stay hidden in dense forests and are active mainly at night, these beautiful birds can often be spotted at dawn or dusk flying low over marshes, grasslands and fields as they hunt.

While many birds are just starting to think about spring, Great Horned Owls are already nesting. Females incubate eggs in mid/late winter, often reusing old hawk, crow, or heron nests. By late winter, fluffy white owlets peek over the edge completely dependent on both parents for warmth and food.
📢A harmful logging bill is back in the Oregon Legislature. HB 4105 would weaken protections for state forests by prioritizing clearcutting over clean water, wildlife, climate, and community drinking water. Click this link to TAKE ACTION before 1 p.m. Feb. 11: birdallianceoregon.org/take-action/...
Join us virtually Tues., Feb. 10 at 7p as local author and environmentalist Rand Schenck presents Forest Under Siege, exploring a century of forest management in the Pacific Northwest, from an era of relentless logging toward recovery. birdallianceoregon.org/event/nature...
TAKE ACTION! 1.25% for Wildlife (HB 4134) would create a sustainable funding source to protect Oregon’s most imperiled wildlife and habitats. Contact the House Revenue Committee by Feb. 4 and ask them to support this once-in-a-generation opportunity. birdallianceoregon.org/take-action/...

It’s the time of year that birders affectionately refer to as Weird Duck Season. Ducks that breed far north make their way here during the winter so there’s generally a more interesting variety of ducks to see. Add in hybrids & sea ducks, & every outing turns into a refresher course on ducks.
