We’re more like primitive fishes than once believed People traditionally think that lungs and limbs are key innovations that came with the vertebrate transition from water to land. But in fact, the genetic basis of air-breathing and limb movement was already established in our fish ancestor 50 million years earlier. This, according to a recent genome mapping of primitive fish conducted by the University of Copenhagen, among others. The new study changes our understanding of a key milestone in our own evolutionary history.

Kalojen uimarakko on huisi esimerkki evoluution kiemuraisista poluista, joilla innovaatiot johtavat toisiin. Me kaikki maalla elävät selkärankaisethan ollaan luukalojen jälkeläisiä. Mutta nykypäivän kalojen uimarakko luultavasti kehittyi… keuhkoista!

Why does this happen? Two candidate mechanisms:

1) AI resets your reference point for how long things "should" take. Unaided work suddenly feels harder than it actually is, -- a kind of hedonic adaptation.

2) AI removes the productive struggle through which you learn what you're capable of.

Surprise, surprise. The party hell-bent on destroying the social, economic, political, cultural, and environmental fabric of the US doesn't want experts studying "how social, economic, political, cultural and environmental forces affect the lives of people."

This reminds me how I once saw a man eating an ice cream cone, then holding it for a pigeon to eat, and then continue eating it himself. This is pretty close to licking if you ask me 🤢

‘A new world is being born’: author Rebecca Solnit on the ‘slow revolution’ the far right cannot tolerate It’s easy to focus on authoritarians and their petty victories. Merimetson aiheuttaman "tuhon" mittakaava on helpointa ymmärtää vertaamalla sitä metsätalouden aiheuttamaan oikeaan luonnontuhoon: Suomessa avohakataan vuosittain yli 100 000 hehtaaria metsää, mutta merimetson asuttamien puustoisten saarien yhteenlaskettu pinta-ala on Suomessa noin 40 hehtaaria. 4/

Evolutionary adaptation to global change reduces sustainable fisheries yields Global warming is altering the fisheries that underpin food security, but projections of these impacts generally exclude evolutionary processes. We describe a model that forecasts how fish will adapt ...

Fish will have to adapt to a warming world, what will that adaptation do to fisheries yields? We answer that question today in Science. I’ll summarise our findings very briefly in this thread

🐟🌡️🧪 New study from #ThermoEvo project
@luke.fi: Juvenile Atlantic salmon show no increase in aerobic scope during an ecologically realistic #heatwave.
This suggests limited capacity to cope with higher oxygen demand in warming rivers, when O2 costs increase.

Thanks for writing that, and it would be great if biologists had more conversations about this. Also we tend to present work e.g. in conferences after the experiment is done, but could be even more useful to do this before it’s done. Registered reports would also help, if we just used them:)

Principles of experimental design for ecology and evolution Here I argue that we do not discuss experimental design, often until it is too late. This editorial seeks to begin a conversation about how and where to replicate appropriately.

The principles of experimental design in ecology and evolution has 20k downloads, but unfortunately I still have to reject ~20% of papers without review because they lack replication at the right level. More discussion among mentors and mentees please.
