Still room to register for this #restoration symposium!
If in-person is not feasible, presentations can also be followed online for free, register via the same link👇
Kalojen uimarakko on huisi esimerkki evoluution kiemuraisista poluista, joilla innovaatiot johtavat toisiin. Me kaikki maalla elävät selkärankaisethan ollaan luukalojen jälkeläisiä. Mutta nykypäivän kalojen uimarakko luultavasti kehittyi… keuhkoista!

Why does this happen? Two candidate mechanisms:
1) AI resets your reference point for how long things "should" take. Unaided work suddenly feels harder than it actually is, -- a kind of hedonic adaptation.
2) AI removes the productive struggle through which you learn what you're capable of.
Surprise, surprise. The party hell-bent on destroying the social, economic, political, cultural, and environmental fabric of the US doesn't want experts studying "how social, economic, political, cultural and environmental forces affect the lives of people."
This reminds me how I once saw a man eating an ice cream cone, then holding it for a pigeon to eat, and then continue eating it himself. This is pretty close to licking if you ask me 🤢
USAssa lauantaina yli 3300 mielenosoitusta joihin osallistui yli 8 miljoonaa ihmistä. Hyvin vähän uutisoitu pikku juttu.
Important news: there’s an account for owls in towels🙌
Merimetson aiheuttaman "tuhon" mittakaava on helpointa ymmärtää vertaamalla sitä metsätalouden aiheuttamaan oikeaan luonnontuhoon: Suomessa avohakataan vuosittain yli 100 000 hehtaaria metsää, mutta merimetson asuttamien puustoisten saarien yhteenlaskettu pinta-ala on Suomessa noin 40 hehtaaria. 4/

Thanks @luke.fi @icesmarine.bsky.social @thefsbi.bsky.social @oulu.fi, LIFE programme and others.
Erä-lehden haastattelussa @jmprok.bsky.social. Vesien lämpenemisen vaikutus lohikaloihin on sen verran tärkeä aihe, että nostaisin tämän feediini vaikka en sattuisikaan jutun kuvituksessa itse nojailemaan lapioon (soraporaan) 😅
Fish will have to adapt to a warming world, what will that adaptation do to fisheries yields? We answer that question today in Science. I’ll summarise our findings very briefly in this thread

Photo by Panu Orell. A juvenile salmon in a river, on top of a red and black rock. There is algae around the rock in the river bottom but the water is very clear. Sunlight is reflected on the fish scales, and showing the red and black dots, and brown, tall stripes on the side of the fish.
🐟🌡️🧪 New study from #ThermoEvo project
@luke.fi: Juvenile Atlantic salmon show no increase in aerobic scope during an ecologically realistic #heatwave.
This suggests limited capacity to cope with higher oxygen demand in warming rivers, when O2 costs increase.

Thanks for writing that, and it would be great if biologists had more conversations about this. Also we tend to present work e.g. in conferences after the experiment is done, but could be even more useful to do this before it’s done. Registered reports would also help, if we just used them:)
The principles of experimental design in ecology and evolution has 20k downloads, but unfortunately I still have to reject ~20% of papers without review because they lack replication at the right level. More discussion among mentors and mentees please.
