My ambition as a Cuban immigrant child of working class folks was to go to college. It did not disappoint. Education opened so many doors for me, helping me acquire the critical thinking skills I used as a journalist and paving the way to achieving my American dream.

Ay, mija, it’s way more complicated. Tourism helped fill the gap after the USSR, but that led to people going for dollar/euro jobs vs higher ed. That led to a brain drain, which has helped fuel a remittance-dependent economy.
